He made assorted television appearances, especially in the 1950s and 1960s – the recorded film was a TV Show in Australia when Armstrong was at the peak of his career. The story of Fleetwood Mac is one of two halves. The first half began within the British blues scene of the late 1960s, where the band’s founder, Peter Green, honed his talent. Peter Green asked fellow Bluesbreakers John McVie and Mick Fleetwood to form a new band after they successfully collaborated in the studio on an instrumental with Jeremy Spencer and Bob Brunning completing the line-up. They took on the new name of Fleetwood Mac. The band had success in the UK with their first two albums and in 1968, with the addition of guitarist, Danny Kirwan, they finally achieved their first number one single, Albatross. However, Fleetwood Mac’s third album, They Play On, would be Peter Green’s last with the band, Without Peter Green, Danny Kirwan would take on the lead role within the group In 1970, Christine McVie, the wife of John McVie was yet another addition, after having provided backing vocals and album artwork for the new line-up.
Yet more changes came to the band’s line-up with Kirwan sadly having to leave due to problems with alcoholism, Songwriter Bob Welch replaced him, but then departed shortly after. Fleetwood Mac with the line-up of Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham and John and Christine McVie entered its second chapter. In 1975 they released what would ironically be their second self-titled album, which would top the US Billboard chart and featured the hit single Rhiannon, written by Stevie Nicks But as the album reached number one in the US and began shifting units of over five million, the band’s personal lives were becoming strained. In 1977 the band released Rumours.
The lyrics of the songs written by each member of the band exposed the personal turmoil that existed within the group Rumours has, to date, sold over 45 million copies worldwide, making it one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Influenced by new wave and punk, Buckingham convinced the band to go for a more experimental approach for the highly-anticipated follow-up album, Tusk. In celebration of the pieces’ 300th anniversary, Czech harpsichordist and conductor Václav Luks and the renowned Baroque ensemble Collegium 1704 recorded all six Brandenburg Concertos on historical instruments in 2021. The concertos are based on the Italian concerto grosso form, in which a group of solo instruments is set against a large ensemble. Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos feature remarkable combinations of solo instruments and virtuoso solos. In this performance at the Hall of Mirrors in the Köthen Castle, Germany, Luks and his Collegium 1704 present Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 in F major, BWV 1046. Faithfully awaiting his return, she cannot accept that Pinkerton has abandoned her. Stage director Giovanna Spinelli’s 2021 production sets the story 35 years after the events of Puccini's original opera. It opens in a hospital room where an ailing Pinkerton, consumed by remorse, lies on his deathbed. Watched over by his American wife, Kate, and their son, Dolore, Pinkerton reveals the long-held secret of his son's birth mother. As he recounts the past, the room comes alive with its ghosts, presenting the story across two timelines at once. By shifting the narrative perspective, Spinelli delivers a gripping and moving new interpretation of this classic work. Among the soloists are Francesca Tiburzi, Thomas Bettinger, Vikena Kamenica, Jean-Luc Ballestra, Daegweon Choi, and Aurore Weiss. This concert, part of the Dutch showcases, features Rotterdam-based Italian bassist and composer Alessandro Fongaro. The performance highlights Fongaro's compositions, which are thematically linked to love and friendship and blend traditional jazz elements with modern influences to create a fresh and engaging sound. Conductor Eduard Topchjan leads the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance of Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, Op. 14. Berlioz wrote the piece of program music in 1830 while still a conservatory student. Inspired on the composer’s unrequited love for Irish actress Harriet Smithson, the five-movement piece portrays the dreams of a young artist who has taken an overdose of opium in the aftermath of a failed love affair. Berlioz used one melody in each movement of the work representing the artist’s beloved, an ‘idée fixe’ (a fixed idea or obsession). The work is scored for a large orchestra and features an astonishing array of instrumental colors, including church bells, an off-stage oboe, and strings playing col legno (using the wood of their bow). This performance was recorded at the Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall in Yerevan, Armenia, in 2021. | |
