03:46The Spring Quartet at the Théâtre du Châtelet
Jack DeJohnette (drums), Esperanza Spalding (double bass), Joe Lovano (saxophone), Leo Genovese (piano) Live from the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris Saxophonist Joe Lovano's quartet may be the perfect representative of modern jazz in 2013, with its sense of adventure, steeped in the timeless tradition of 'Theme and variations', its rebellious youth and new talent: Jack DeJohnette, Esperanza Spalding and Leo Genovese. In the history of modern jazz, few great musicians have not, at some point or other, collaborated with Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano, Esperanza Spalding - and more recently Leo Genovese, a rising star of the piano... The reunion of these great jazz musicians in a trans-generational quartet embodying a whole chapter in the history of jazz is definitely a major event. Jack DeJohnette is one of the most respected jazzmen of the past five decades: as a leader or a sideman, with his polyrhythmic style, forceful drive and immediately identifiable sound, he has always been an explorer and a powerful architect, whose creativity has been a major asset of Keith Jarrett's trio for the past thirty years. The New York Times, usually reticent in such matters, hailed him as 'one of the greatest musicians in the history of jazz'. Joe Lovano, a Grammy Award winner, has over the last few years become an undisputed star of the saxophone. His knowledge of the instrument, his imperious need to invent and cover new ground have made him one of the most recorded musicians on the legendary Blue Note label, with over 23 recordings! Her charm and energy are just an external manifestation of her talent: young composer and bass player Esperanza Spalding is a true phenomenon. The acclaimed winner of the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Musicien in the New Artist category, she keeps broadening her horizons: her recordings show a deep interest for Brazilian music, contemporary pop and a thorough knowledge of orchestral colouring. This amazing trio is joined by a young Argentinian pianist - also a composer - who has played with Esperanza Spalding all over the world. After his training in classical and contemporary music, Leo Genovese moved to Boston where his energy and extensive knowledge of the piano (and keyboards in general) brought him wide recognition.
