The Newport Jazz Festival, first established in the North-American town of Newport, Rhode Island in the summer of 1954, has now grown to become one of the largest multi-day celebrations of jazz worldwide. It has resulted in numerous famous live albums from top-rate jazz stars, and has spawned several worldwide tours, including editions of the Newport Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. In 1968, the Newport Jazz Festival in Rotterdam welcomed three talented Americans: pianist Horace Silver, guitarist Muddy Waters, and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, alongside their bands. | |

Following a highly successful small-group jazz concert at New York Town Hall on May 17, 1947, Armstrong's manager Joe Glaser dissolved the Armstrong big band on August 13, 1947 and established a six-piece small group. This group was called the All Stars, and in 1964 Louis Armstrong recorded his biggest-selling record, Hello, Dolly! He made assorted television appearances, especially in the 1950s and 1960s – the recorded film was a TV Show in Australia when Armstrong was at the peak of his career. Armstrong kept up his busy tour schedule until a few years before his death in 1971. He also toured Africa, Europe, and Asia under sponsorship of the US State Department with great success, earning the nickname ‘Ambassador Satch’. | |

American jazz tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins (*1930) is regarded as one of jazz history's greatest musicians. Rollins already recorded with his peers, including Miles Davis and Bud Powell, in the early 1950s. In this broadcast, Rollins teaches a group of young musicians, consisting of Charles Schneider (tenor saxophone), Marc Thomas (alto saxophone), Yves Torchinsky (double bass), and Stéphane Gremaud (drums). This footage is interspersed with an interview with the jazz legend, in which he discusses how he discovered jazz, and the expressive freedom he found in the genre. These recordings were made at Salle Wagram in Paris on October 20, 1980. | |

Recorded on February 22, 1970, at Maison de la Radio in Paris, France, American saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Rahsaan Roland Kirk performs with his band, The Vibration Society. The group consists of Dick Griffin on trombone, Ron Burton on piano, Vernon Shelby Martin on double bass, Jerome Cooper on drums and Joe "Habao" Texidor on tambourine. On the program are Sweet Fire (written by Rahsaan Roland Kirk), Make Me A Pallet On The Floor (written by W. C. Handy), and I Say A Little Prayer (written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David). | |

Annual trade fair, exhibition, and festival jazzahead! is one of the international jazz community’s most important events. Hosted in Bremen, Germany, jazzahead! brings together musicians, bookers, agents, organizers, jazz experts, and music enthusiasts at the world’s largest jazz event. In 2024, jazzahead! paid special attention to the jazz scene of the Netherlands and invited over forty jazz acts to perform over the course of three days. Among the acts presenting themselves at jazzahead! 2024 is Alessandro Fongaro’s quartet ‘Pietre’ (‘stones’). This concert, part of the Dutch showcases, features Rotterdam-based Italian bassist and composer Alessandro Fongaro. The performance highlights Fongaro's compositions, which are thematically linked to love and friendship and blend traditional jazz elements with modern influences to create a fresh and engaging sound. Pietre features Fongaro (double bass), Sun-Mi Hong (drums), Nicolò Ricci (tenor sax), and Jesse Schilderink (baritone and tenor sax). | |

Hosted in Bremen, Germany, jazzahead! brings together musicians, bookers, agents, organizers, jazz experts, and music enthusiasts. Due to COVID-19, only half of the scheduled performances of the 2021 edition were actually recorded in Bremen. Among the performing bands is the Nefertiti Quartet. The band, which takes its name from a Wayne Shorter composition, was founded in 2013 by pianist Delphine Deau at the CRR conservatoire in Paris, France. She is joined by saxophonist Camille Maussion, double bassist Pedro Ivo Ferreira, and drummer Pierre Demange. | |
