Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) composed nine books of madrigals in half a century, which helped transform the genre from the polyphonic, a cappella madrigals of the late Renaissance to the ‘concertato’ madrigals of the early Baroque, shifting the style’s focus to the ability of music to express emotions contained in a text. In 2011, British tenor Paul Agnew and renowned Baroque ensemble Les Arts Florissants started recording eight books of Monteverdi’s madrigals. In this program, Agnew leads Les Arts Florissants in the madrigals of Book III. Published in 1592, the book contains twenty madrigals for five voices. This performance was recorded at the Cité de la musique in Paris, France, in 2012. | |

In 1982, American saxophonist Gerry Mulligan gave an unforgettable performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. Mulligan was one of the leading arrangers of the cool jazz era, who worked with Miles Davis, Stan Kenton and Claude Thornhill in the 1950s and 1960s. Mulligan’s early pianoless 1950s quartet with trumpeter Chet Baker is still regarded as one of the finest groups in cool jazz. Born in New York in 1927, Mulligan spent his life composing, arranging and playing jazz until his death on January 20, 1996. | |

For five years, violinists Pierre Colombet and Gabriel Le Magadure, violist Marie Chilemme, and cellist Raphaël Merlin immersed themselves in Beethoven’s 650 pages of sheet music. Their efforts culminated in the performance of the composer’s complete repertoire for string quartet, which covers three decades of Beethoven's musical creativity, during six impressive concerts at Philharmonie de Paris in the autumn of 2020. Quatuor Ébène explored every facet of Beethoven's string quartet repertoire: from the youthful Opus 18 string quartets to the Razumovsky, Harp, and Serioso quartets (Opus 59, 74, and 95) from his middle period, and finally, the depth of his late quartets (Opus 127 to 135). This program features Quatuor Ébène performing Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 5 in A major, Op. 18, No. 5; String Quartet No. 4 in C minor, Op. 18, No. 4; and String Quartet No. 12 in E-flat major, Op. 127. The Italian-Swiss ensemble Trio des Alpes, consisting of Hana Kotková (violin), Claude Hauri (cello), and Corrado Greco (piano), and the Orchestra da Camera di Mantova join forces in this performance of the Concertino for Piano Trio and String Orchestra, H. 232 by Czech composer Bohuslav Martin (1890-1959). Martin was a prolific composer, creating an oeuvre of almost 400 works. The four-movement Concertino was completed in 1933 and saw its first performance in 1936, by the Basler Kammerorchester under the baton of Paul Sacher. During the years 1931-1943, Martin wrote multiple concertante compositions. Many of these works were more or less influenced by the Baroque ‘concerto grosso’ form, in which a group of solo instruments is set against a large ensemble, a principle that appealed to the composer. ‘Ella Fitzgerald: Live in '57’ features ‘The First Lady Of Song’ in a distinct performance. It's the earliest known complete concert of Ella to be captured on film. Shot in Belgium, this 1957 concert sees her performing with jazz greats Ray Brown, Herb Ellis, Jo Jones and the legendary Oscar Peterson on classics such as ‘Lullaby Of Birdland’ and ‘It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)’. Although she wanted to be a dancer at first, Ella Fitzgerald already listened to recordings of Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby and The Boswell Sisters at an early age. After her debut at an amateur talent show in 1934, Ella joined Chick Webb’s Orchestra with which she recorded several hits; after Webb died, she became the leader of the orchestra. In the late 1940s, Ella Fitzgerald became known as the ‘First Lady of Song’, with her wide vocal range of three octaves. The American jazz singer was particularly appreciated for her pure tone, intonation and phrasing, and unparalleled improvisational abilities. In a career that spanned close to 60 years, Fitzgerald sold 40 million albums and won 13 Grammy Awards, mainly for her definitive interpretations of the Great American Songbook. | |

The story of Fleetwood Mac is one of two halves. The first half began within the British blues scene of the late 1960s, where the band’s founder, Peter Green, honed his talent. Peter Green asked fellow Bluesbreakers John McVie and Mick Fleetwood to form a new band after they successfully collaborated in the studio on an instrumental with Jeremy Spencer and Bob Brunning completing the line-up. They took on the new name of Fleetwood Mac. The band had success in the UK with their first two albums and in 1968, with the addition of guitarist, Danny Kirwan, they finally achieved their first number one single, Albatross. However, Fleetwood Mac’s third album, They Play On, would be Peter Green’s last with the band, Without Peter Green, Danny Kirwan would take on the lead role within the group In 1970, Christine McVie, the wife of John McVie was yet another addition, after having provided backing vocals and album artwork for the new line-up.
Yet more changes came to the band’s line-up with Kirwan sadly having to leave due to problems with alcoholism, Songwriter Bob Welch replaced him, but then departed shortly after. Fleetwood Mac with the line-up of Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham and John and Christine McVie entered its second chapter. In 1975 they released what would ironically be their second self-titled album, which would top the US Billboard chart and featured the hit single Rhiannon, written by Stevie Nicks But as the album reached number one in the US and began shifting units of over five million, the band’s personal lives were becoming strained. In 1977 the band released Rumours.
The lyrics of the songs written by each member of the band exposed the personal turmoil that existed within the group Rumours has, to date, sold over 45 million copies worldwide, making it one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Influenced by new wave and punk, Buckingham convinced the band to go for a more experimental approach for the highly-anticipated follow-up album, Tusk. Schumann composed the piece in 1836 but revised it in 1853. Kissin carefully scrutinized both versions and has allowed himself to borrow the best from both. Bulgarian conductor Pavel Baleff conducts the Orchestra and Choir of the Opéra de Limoges in a performance of Antonín Dvořák’s lyric fairytale opera Rusalka (1900). The work’s libretto is written by Czech poet Jaroslav Kvapil. Rusalka, an elusive water nymph, falls in love with the Prince, who happens to swim in her lake. Rusalka longs to become human herself so that she can be together with the Prince. The witch Ježibaba is willing to help Rusalka, but warns her that the transition to a mortal human being comes at a high price: the nymph will lose the power of speech. What is more, if mute Rusalka cannot keep the love of a human, she will be damned for eternity. Stage director Nicola Raab and TV director Arnaud Lalanne created a truly filmic production of Dvořák’s masterpiece. Among the soloists are Ruzan Mantashyan, Adam Smith, Rafal Pawnuk, Marie-Adeline Henry, Marion Lebègue, and Alexandra Marcellier. This performance was recorded at the Opéra de Limoges, France, in February 2021. | |

The String Quartet is the last in the set of six quartets that were dedicated to Joseph Haydn. Written between 1782 and 1785, these are also known as the Haydn Quartets (Op. 10). String Quartet No. 19 is remarkable for its slow, dissonant introduction, giving the piece its nickname. This ominous passage suddenly gives way to the bright Allegro in C major. This performance was recorded at Opéra Comique in Paris, France, in 2015. | |
