Shot in Belgium, this 1957 concert sees her performing with jazz greats Ray Brown, Herb Ellis, Jo Jones and the legendary Oscar Peterson on classics such as ‘Lullaby Of Birdland’ and ‘It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)’. Although she wanted to be a dancer at first, Ella Fitzgerald already listened to recordings of Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby and The Boswell Sisters at an early age. After her debut at an amateur talent show in 1934, Ella joined Chick Webb’s Orchestra with which she recorded several hits; after Webb died, she became the leader of the orchestra. In the late 1940s, Ella Fitzgerald became known as the ‘First Lady of Song’, with her wide vocal range of three octaves. The American jazz singer was particularly appreciated for her pure tone, intonation and phrasing, and unparalleled improvisational abilities. In a career that spanned close to 60 years, Fitzgerald sold 40 million albums and won 13 Grammy Awards, mainly for her definitive interpretations of the Great American Songbook. | |

Though a member of Coltrane’s group, he was never overshadowed by the saxophonist, but complemented and even inspired Coltrane’s open-minded approach. McCoy Tyner is considered one of the most influential jazz pianists of the 20th century, an honour he earned both with Coltrane and in his years of performing following Coltrane’s death. | |

Three decades later, Château d'Hérouville has reopened its doors. This program follows American singer-songwriter Melody Gardot as she visits the legendary studio. After an accident in 2003 left her hypersensitive to light and sound, Gardot discovered the healing power of music. At Hérouville, she gives an interview and plays a breathtaking live set. As part of the ‘Da Camera’ concert series of the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid, the Spanish Grupo Fundación Mutua Madrileña performs Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in D major, ‘Titan’, in an arrangement for chamber orchestra by conductor Francisco Alonso Serena. The slowly starting opening movement of the symphony depicts the awakening of nature in spring. The rural second movement is based on a Ländler, an Austrian folk dance, followed by a funeral march in the third movement. The expansive final movement brings back elements from the first movement, thus unifying the symphony. This performance was recorded at Auditorio Sony of the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid, Spain, on May 30, 2023. | |

In 2013, the Finnish conductor Hannu Lintu was appointed principal conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Lintu studied piano and cello at the Sibelius Academy and the Turku conservatorium in Sweden’s southeast. He started conducting at the Sibelius Academy. His many concerts with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2012 made him the obvious replacement for Sakari Oramo, who, after many years as conductor and concert master, terminated his contract in 2012. The orchestra specializes in the performance of Finnish music, but also performs the great masterpieces of Gustav Mahler and Béla Bartók. The Finnish composer Jean Sibelius is the orchestra’s favourite, as well as the conductor. In cooperation with Finland’s national public broadcasting company Yle, all seven Sibelius symphonies are recorded and broadcast. After a brief spoken introduction about the piece, the orchestra performs the complete symphony. While composing his Symphony No. 5, Sibelius was also sketching his Symphony No. 6, using a number of ideas he could not fit in his No. 5 for No. 6. The music is based on modal lines, which are often used in church music. His Symphony No. 6 has few melodic lines and a slightly gloomier atmosphere. For that reason, Sibelius added the description ‘When shadows lengthen’ to the title. | |

The batá repertoire – the deep classical music of West Africa – permeates Valdés’ piano solos throughout the concert. The Danish/Italian duo of Teis Semey and Giovanni Iacovella join forces with eclectic Italian singer-songwriter Marta Arpini, blending punk, indie rock, and improvised music into a cosmic journey. Equipped with an MPC beatmaker, guitars, synthesizers, drums, and a laptop, they immerse themselves in a dynamic performance of button smashing, drum kicks, and pedal pressing.
