His official discography includes Get Lifted (2004), Once Again (2006), Evolver (2008) and Love in the Future (2013). Conductor Eduard Topchjan leads the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance of Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, Op. 14. Berlioz wrote the piece of program music in 1830 while still a conservatory student. Inspired on the composer’s unrequited love for Irish actress Harriet Smithson, the five-movement piece portrays the dreams of a young artist who has taken an overdose of opium in the aftermath of a failed love affair. Berlioz used one melody in each movement of the work representing the artist’s beloved, an ‘idée fixe’ (a fixed idea or obsession). The work is scored for a large orchestra and features an astonishing array of instrumental colors, including church bells, an off-stage oboe, and strings playing col legno (using the wood of their bow). This performance was recorded at the Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall in Yerevan, Armenia, in 2021. | |

A century onward, this documentary traces the first two decades of jazz in Latvia in this portrait of Jack Michalicky, the first known Latvian jazz pianist. Michalicky was a musician from head to toe – a gifted violinist, he truly felt at home at the piano. Slender and lithe, the imaginative pianist’s fingers flew across the keys like a true miracle. Seemingly indefatigable, Michalicky would play improvised solos during breaks in the band's sets, if the patrons wished. After recording all 32 Ludwig van Beethoven piano sonatas to celebrate the composer's 250th birth anniversary, celebrated Italian pianist Riccardo Schwartz decided to record solo piano works by Robert Schumann. In this performance, Schwartz presents Schumann’s Novelletten, Op. 21. The eight pieces for piano that make up this song cycle are often performed separately. It bears a dedication to pianist Adolph Henselt. Schumann composed the pieces between January and April of 1838, around the same time as Kinderszenen, Op. 18, and Kreisleriana, Op. 16. Novelletten is the most substantial yet least-known of Schumann’s piano cycles. Acclaimed pianist Riccardo Schwartz (1986) has performed as a soloist with many world-renowned conductors, including Gustav Kuhn and Yuri Temirkanov. His acclaimed performances include recitals and concertos for piano and orchestra in many prestigious concert halls. | |

However, few interpretations of Richard Wagner's Parsifal received as much critical acclaim as did Nikolas Lehnhoff's version for the English National Opera in 1999. Lehnhoff, who was once an assistant to Wieland Wagner, opera director and grandson of the legendary composer, gives new life to the epic tale without forceful renovation - simply by shining a light on often neglected supporting characters. Bernhard Haitink conducts the Berlin Philharmonic in a performance of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1. Directed by Barry Gavin, this concert took place at the Berliner Philharmonie in 1992. Mahler was inspired by Jean Paul’s novel Titan, in which an artistically gifted young man, driven by his failure to find his way in society, eventually commits suicide in despair. The genesis of this work was not easy for Mahler: he composed it between 1887 and 1888, at the time when he was conductor of the Leipzig opera. The first version of the work first took the form of a two-part symphonic poem and premiered in Budapest in 1898. However, the work was poorly received by the public and critics, which forced Mahler to revise it. The new version resulted in the wonderful Symphony No. 1 that we know today, an incredible achievement for such a young composer. | |

It so happened he wasn’t so much interested in jazz, preferring rhythm and blues, Motown and Stax records, funk groups, and North African and Indian music. Eastwood became a brilliant bassist and the composer of highly original soundtracks. His 2015 album "Time Pieces" is a collaboration with brilliant British musicians, such as trumpeter Quentin Collins and saxophonist Brandon Allen. In this broadcast, Eastwood and his fellow musicians revisit the hard bop legacy of Blue Note Records. The work premiered on April 3, 1869 in Copenhagen, Denmark, with Edmund Neupert as the soloist, and was received enthusiastically. The Norwegian premiere followed a few months later. Besides, he appeared with several renowned orchestras such as Lucerne Festival Strings, Camerata Salzburg, and Prague Chamber Orchestra. In the current recital, Bacchetti performs J. S. Bach’s celebrated Goldberg Variations, BWV 988. Completed in 1741, the work is named after German harpsichordist Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, who might have been the first to have performed the work. Bach’s masterpiece consists of an aria and a set of thirty variations. Rather than writing variations on the aria’s melody, Bach used the accompanying bass line as his starting point. This performance was recorded at Theater Carlo Felice in Genoa, Italy, on April 13, 2015. | |
