The two team up for an amazing concert in which jazz is combined with soul and a touch of chanson française. The Franco-American pianist Terrasson delights in travelling the world, collaboration with others and leading his own trio, quartet, or quintet. With his long-time friend, Stéphane Belmondo, Terrasson has produced wonderful CDs and beautiful concerts. One then finds the trumpeter on the pianist’s album ‘Gouache’; on another, the pianist guests on Belmondo’s ‘Ever After’. At the Jazz en Baie festival, the duo plays its amazing piano and trumpet music. Highly recommended! | |

In a 2019 performance from the Muziekgebouw in Eindhoven, Hartmut Haenchen conducts the philharmonie zuidnederland for this performance of Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7. The German-born conductor, who became a Dutch citizen through naturalisation, was chief conductor at the Dutch National Opera, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra before he was finally knighted for his services to the Dutch music landscape. The majestic opening theme of the first movement of Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 foreshadows a momentous work, lasting over 20 minutes. The doubt and turmoil felt throughout the Adagio, the second movement, are supposedly Bruckner's response to the news of the death of his idol, Richard Wagner. Bruckner's use of Wagner tubas and double bass tubas creates an even more solemn and grandiose air within the Adagio. Trumpet signals refer to crowing cockerels as they interrupt the grim and clamorous Scherzo. In the Finale, Bruckner employs a persistent rhythmic pulse that starts softly yet builds up towards the explosive final bars. | |

At the focus is primarily his relationship with Pauline, to whom he was married for over 55 years up to his death. Until today she applies as a harridan who often embarrassed her husband in public. It hereby falls under the table that Strauss at the beginning and the end of his relationship composed his finest songs for the trained singer who gave up her career for him and covered his back for the rest of his life. What was it that made the broken old man, who experienced the most varied of epochs in German history, from the Empire to the Nazi dictatorship to the post-war period, write in 1948 in his final song (“At Sunset”) one of the most moving declarations of love in the history of music: “We have through sorrow and joy gone hand in hand”? Richard Strauss and his Heroines – this is the first filmed search for clues about the unforgettable heroines created by Strauss. It is both the story of a turbulent, and at the end moving, love story of two people who were prepared to walk through fire for each other. We visit Strauss' last surviving grandchild in Garmisch and we meet the great Strauss singers Brigitte Fassbaender, Reneé Fleming, Dame Gwyneth Jones and Christa Ludwig, who report on their famous Strauss roles. With the conductor Franz Welser-Möst we research the secret of Strauss’ instrumentation genius. Strauss expert Christoph Wagner-Trenckwitz, member of the board of the Vienna Volksoper, leads us through the film.

Devised by San Francisco Symphony Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen, pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Cartier in-house perfumer Mathilde Laurent, the San Francisco Symphony and Cartier present a multisensory production of ‘Prometheus’. Patáx was heavily influenced by seminal fusion bands like Weather Report and Return to Forever. Don’t mistake this Spanish powerhouse for a carbon copy of either, however, as Patáx presents an accomplished mix of styles, including soul, jazz, funk and hip-hop. The group is led by the passionate Spanish-American percussionist Jorge Perez, who draws his musical influence from both sides of the Atlantic. The tight interplay between Perez and his bandmates as well as the audience’s enthusiasm at Teatro Calderón in Madrid make it a night to remember. This is the first of two parts. | |

Salif Keita’s music is a rich combination of traditional Malian music with European and American influences. We can hear this in the instrumentation of Keita’s music, which varies from traditional West-African instruments to Western European ones. The Malian singer was cast out by his family because of his albinism. In 1967 he moved to Bamako, where he started his musical career and joined Les Ambassadeurs (Internationaux). He achieved international acknowledgement with this band in the 1970s. After spending a couple of years in Ivory Coast, Salif has found his home base in Paris since 1984. During this 2010 concert, he proves to be rightfully referred to as “The Golden Voice of Africa”. | |

The conductorless ensemble consists of musicians from the most prestigious European orchestras, international soloists, and young talents. In this performance, Les Dissonances play Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Serenade No. 10 for winds in B-flat major, K. 361, also known as the ‘Gran Partita’. The composition is written for twelve winds and double bass and consists of seven parts. The piece’s duration is longer than the composer’s other chamber music works. Remarkably, Mozart chose to use a larger instrumentation. To the eight instruments of the common wind octet, Mozart added two basset horns, two additional horns, and a double bass. Frédéric Chaslin (1963) leads the Orchestra and Chorus of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège in a performance of Léo Delibes’s tragic opera Lakmé (1883). Written to a libretto by Edmond Gondinet and Philippe Gille, the opera is set in nineteenth-century British India and tells the story of Lakmé, who falls in love with Gérald, a British officer. However, Lakmé’s father, the Brahmin priest Nilakantha, vows revenge after he discovers that Gérald has trespassed on their sacred ground. Like many of his contemporaries, Delibes was fond of exoticism, evoking foreign lands and cultures in the tradition of Georges Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs de perles (1863) and Camille Saint-Saëns’s Samson et Dalila (1877). Delibes’s opera features the celebrated “Flower Duet,” sung by Lakmé and her servant Mallika as they gather flowers by the river, and also the wonderful coloratura aria “Bell Song” (Air des Clochettes). Among the soloists are Jodie Devos, Philippe Talbot, Lionel Lhote, Pierre Doyen, and Marion Lebègue. This production was recorded at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège, Belgium, in 2022. | |

The trio ‘Nandi’ is made up of the Indian master percussionist Ghatam Suresh, bassist Pascal Lovergne, and pianist Stefan Orins. They give the tried-and-true piano-bass-drums format a fresh new sound by blending jazz with South Indian Carnatic rhythms and melodies. Every year the Berliner Philharmoniker gives an outstanding concert at the Waldbühne. This amphitheatre in Berlin can host 22,000 people and is used for many events such as film showings, boxing matches and concerts. In 1993 the Berliner Philharmoniker, under the baton of the Japanese conductor Seiji Ozawa, performed a Russian program. The concert starts with Russian Easter Festival Overture, Op. 36 by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, followed by Tchaikovsky' world-famous Nutcracker Suite, Overture 1812 and the Elegy from the Serenade for Strings.
