Following the successful operas Le nozze di Figaro (1786) and Don Giovanni (1787), Così fan tutte was the third and last collaboration between Mozart and the Venetian librettist and poet Lorenzo Da Ponte. The opera tells the story of two young officers, Ferrando and Guglielmo, who are convinced of the fidelity of their fiancées, the sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella. However, their older friend Don Alfonso contends that women cannot be trusted. He proposes a plan to test his theory: the young men must pretend to be called away to the front but then return disguised as Albanian soldiers to try to seduce their lonely fiancées. The young men reluctantly agree to Alfonso’s test. Will the sisters succumb to the advances of the disguised suitors? Among the soloists are Valentina Naforniţa (Fiordiligi), Vasilisa Berzhanskaya (Dorabella), Mattia Olivieri (Guglielmo), Matthew Swensen (Ferrando), Benedetta Torre (Despina), and Thomas Hampson (Don Alfonso). The music balances intelligently between being clever and being emotional. It is executed brilliantly by some Europe’s finest baroque musicians of the Barokksolistene ensemble. Væring is a remarkable vocalist who masters both the intensely fragile and the more powerful nuances. She is complemented by a pianist whose exquisitely tasteful playing builds on the great Scandinavian piano tradition, adding a pinch of Swedish folklore, pop music and free jazz. In combination with Trinelises unvarnished voice, the unique timbre of the baroque instruments, the vibrato-less sounds, and the ‘on the beat’ approach to groove, the music is far removed from the usual romantic setting of sweet pop songs. After recording all 32 Ludwig van Beethoven piano sonatas to celebrate the composer's 250th birth anniversary, celebrated Italian pianist Riccardo Schwartz decided to record solo piano works by Robert Schumann. Schumann composed his Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor, Op. 14 (a "Concerto for piano without orchestra", in the words of music publisher Tobias Haslinger) in 1836. He dedicated it to piano virtuoso Ignaz Moscheles. In 1853, Schumann revised the work and added a Scherzo as a second movement. The final movement is reminiscent of Schumann’s earlier composition Kreisleriana, Op. 16. Acclaimed pianist Riccardo Schwartz (1986) has performed as a soloist with many world-renowned conductors, including Gustav Kuhn and Yuri Temirkanov. His acclaimed performances include recitals and concertos for piano and orchestra in many prestigious concert halls. | |

By the time this set was recorded at Brussels Jazz Club in the summer of 1980, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard had already built an impressive resume. During the 1960s he became a leading voice in the hard bop movement while not shying away from avant-garde sessions with the likes of John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy. In the 1970s, Hubbard expanded his palette by recording in more diverse settings that included electric instruments and orchestral arrangements. On this club date, Hubbard showcases all of the experience he had accumulated up to this point. The working group consists includes David Schnitter on tenor saxophone, Billy Childs on keyboards, Larry Klein on bass, and Sinclair Lott on drums. Watch as the quintet deftly switches between acoustic and electric instruments and Hubbard entertains the crowd with his onstage antics. | |

In each part, each character is represented by a different instrument or instrument section, offering a vivid introduction to the orchestra's instrumental families. Michael Hutchence founding member, lead singer and lyricist of rock band INXS from 1977 until his death on November 22nd 1997. Hutchence was the archetypal rock showman. He exuded an overtly sexual, macho cool with his flowing locks, and lithe and exuberant stage movements. His private life was often reported in the Australian and international press, with a string of love affairs with prominent actresses, models and singers. Hutchence's relationship with UK television presenter Paula Yates began while she was married to musician and Live Aid organiser Bob Geldof. During July of the same year, Hutchence and Yates had a daughter. On the morning of 22 November 1997, Hutchence was found dead in his hotel room in Sydney. His death was reported by the New South Wales Coroner to be the result of suicide. | |

After arranging for Cassio to be dismissed, Iago makes Othello believe that his wife Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio. Othello decides to kill her. At night, he wakes her with a kiss and asks her to admit that she betrayed him. Although she tries in vain to convince him of her innocence, Othello strangles her. Emilia then exposes Iago's plot. The Newport Jazz Festival, first established in the North-American town of Newport, Rhode Island in the summer of 1954, has now grown to become one of the largest multi-day celebrations of jazz worldwide. It has resulted in numerous famous live albums from top-rate jazz stars, and has spawned several worldwide tours, including editions of the Newport Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. In October 1972, an outstanding lineup played shoulder-to-shoulder at the 7th Newport Jazz Festival held in Rotterdam's then-recently built concert venue De Doelen. These masterful groups consisted of pianist Dave Brubeck and his trio (Jack Six on bass, Alan Dawson on drums), with accompaniment from Paul Desmond on alto saxophone and Gerry Mulligan on baritone saxophone, and bassist Charles Mingus and his group (Joe Gardner on trumpet, Hamiet Bluiett on baritone saxophone, John Foster on piano, Roy Brooks on drums) with the great high-note trumpeter Cat Anderson as a guest, alongside Hammond organist Jimmy Smith and his band (featuring Art Farmer on flugelhorn, Illinois Jacquet on tenor saxophone, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Clark Terry on trumpet, and Roy Haynes on drums) at the Newport Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. | |

Claudio Abbado leads the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra in a performance of Arnold Schönberg’s symphonic poem 'Pelleas und Melisande', Op. 5. With the encouragement of Richard Strauss, Schönberg composed the work during 1902-1903. The piece is inspired by a play about a doomed love by Belgian writer Maurice Maeterlinck. Written in the key of D minor, Pelleas und Melisande is one of the composer’s early tonal works in the late Romantic style. The work is scored for a large orchestra and is in one continuous movement that lasts approximately 38 minutes. This performance was recorded at the Musikverein Vienna, Austria, in 2006. | |

In 1722, when Johann Sebastian Bach lived in Köthen, Germany, he published a book of preludes and fugues in all 24 major and minor keys. This collection became known as The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book One, BWV 846–869. About two decades later, Bach compiled a second book in Leipzig, which became known as The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book Two, BWV 870-893. Bach intended these pieces for the clavier, which includes the harpsichord, clavichord, and organ. Despite this unclarity, these pieces are regarded as some of the most important works in the history of Western classical music. In this broadcast, Joanna MacGregor plays Preludes and Fugues Nos. 13 to 24 (BWV 858-869) from Book One of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, recorded at the Palau Güell in Barcelona, Spain, in 2010. | |
