Il secondo capitolo si concentra su "l'ideazione della Commedia e la scrittura dell'inferno" e racconta come, attraverso il recupero del modello virgiliano del viaggio nell'al di là, si realizza la sintesi tra il progetto di poema paradisiaco dedicato a Beatrice e quello politico morale dedicato a Virgilio. Il terzo capitolo si concentra infine sul sorgere e sul tramontare delle speranze politiche di Dante legate alla discesa di Arrigo VII in Italia e sul passaggio quindi "dal sogno imperiale alla città celeste: Purgatorio e Paradiso" e racconta la stesura della seconda e della terza cantica della Commedia, collegandola agli anni di esilio sino all'approdo a Verona e poi a Ravenna.
