What Jamie Cullum is to England, Wouter Hamel is to the Netherlands: a performer who knows the difference between jazz and pop! Hamel is backed by big band Sven Happel (double bass), Jasper van Hulten (drums), Gijs Anders van Straalen (percussion), Rory Ronde (guitar), Benjamin Herman (saxophone), and a string ensemble. Hamel plays the guitar, piano, sings, and writes many of his own songs. He made his debut in 2007 with the eponymous album Hamel on Dox Records; it was a hit on the Dutch albums chart, remained on the Top 20 for over a year, and spawned the hit "As Long as We're in Love”. The show was recorded at the legendary venue Paradiso, a former church considered the "pop temple" of the Netherlands. Hamel's performance of "One More Time on the Merry-Go-Round" perfectly connects the beautiful venue in the heart of Amsterdam and the enthousiastic audience. | |

Annual trade fair, exhibition, and festival jazzahead! is one of the international jazz community's most important events. Hosted in Bremen, Germany, jazzahead! brings together musicians, bookers, agents, organizers, jazz experts, and music enthusiasts at the world’s largest jazz event. In 2023, jazzahead! paid special attention to Germany’s jazz scene and invited thirty jazz acts from all over the world to perform over the course of three days. Among the ensembles presenting themselves at jazzahead! 2023 is Karja/Renard/Wandinger. As a trio, Estonian pianist Kirke Karja, French bassist Etienne Renard, and German drummer Ludwig Wandinger focus on elements from progressive jazz, free improvisation, and contemporary composition. Rotterdam’s ‘ BIRD’ is a club, café and restaurant with a live music programme that's deeply rooted in jazz, and also branches out towards soul, funk, hip-hop and electronic music as well. Its name ‘BIRD’ refers to the nickname of the legendary New York jazz saxophonist, bebop co-founder Charlie Parker (1920-1955). BIRD serves Neapolitan pizzas, good wines, no-nonsense beers and an all-round metropolitan rawness. Since 2014, this urban jazz club and DJAZZ.tv have been collaborating for a series of music programmes: ‘BIRD.tv’, allowing you to experience the best BIRD concerts and interviews as from a first row seat! This episode shows you the four-piece jazz/hip hop ensemble BADBADNOTGOOD, whose collaborators include the likes of rapper ‘Tyler, The Creator’, the Haitian-Canadian electronic musician Kaytranada, the vocalist Kali Uchis, and the rapper Ghostface Killah. BADBADNOTGOOD is endlessly inventive: its four members have ultimately crafted their own, lasting mark on hip-hop and electronic beats. | |

The term "jam-session" was coined in the 1920s when black and white musicians gathered in smoke-filled bars after their respective concerts to enjoy the kind of jazz they could not play in traditional sets. Bing Crosby was a regular at these sessions, and had fun marking the first and third beats of musical phrases by clapping hands, which the musicians call "jammin' the beat". Today, the Seine Sessions revive the happy years of "jam sessions", while the cream of jazz, blues, gipsy and funk Parisian scenes occurs on the boards of the legendary restaurant and jazz club Le Réservoir. Titled "Legendary Jazz", this episode hosted by Eddy King features unique performances by artists playing together for the first time, and interviews with Steve McCraven, Oona Guino, Rodolphe Lauretta, and many others. | |

GIIPUJA has been bringing modern jazz with a distinct ethnic flavor to Croatian audiences since 2013. The unusual line-up of double bass, drums, bass clarinet, violin, and various folkloristic instruments from the Istria region, makes for a strikingly original and unique sound. At times, GIIPUJA embraces harsh dissonance, fueled by the interplay of narrow intervals characteristic for the Istrian scale, whilst at other times it uses those same compositional and improvisational principles to create a jubilant atmosphere. This beautiful performance of their project ‘Forest GIIPUJA’ was recorded at Croatia’s Učka Nature Park in 2016. Since 1994, World Music Expo (WOMEX) has been attracting musicians, agents, a great number of press agencies, as well as media companies from all over the world. Its main exposition event has been held in various locations throughout Europe, including Berlin, Brussels, Marseille, Stockholm, Seville, Cardiff, and Budapest. In 2018, WOMEX was held in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. One of its showcase participants, Edina Szirtes Mokus, expresses her talents in a restless exploration across multiple genres, manifested in her prolific output which includes her work with various artists as well as her own band, string quartet, singer/songwriter projects and compositions for musicals and dance theatre. | |

Among the performing artists are Canadian trumpeter Steph Richards and her quartet. Steph Richards is regarded as an adventurous jazz innovator, who has steadily established herself as a prominent and influential voice in the NYC experimental scene. Richards, who is driven by a curiosity how listeners interact with music, is open to experimenting with sensory variables, including scent, light and space. This “supertalent” on the bass (DLF Kultur) masterfully merges African rhythms with jazz in compositions inspired by cities like Dakar, Paris, and New York. Following collaborations with the likes of Joe Zawinul and Marcus Miller, his current music blends West African energy with New Orleans soul. Wade’s sextet at jazzahead! 2024 is comprised of Alune Wade (vocals, bass), Harry Ahonlonsou (saxophone), Camille Passeri (trumpet), Carl-Henri Morisset (keys), Cedric Duchemann (keys), and Alix Goffic (drums). | |
