Pianist Peter Beets and the Henk Meutgeert New Jazz Orchestra performed at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on April 22, 2019. French singer Camille Bertault made a special guest appearance. In 2018, the New Jazz Orchestra was founded by two veterans of Dutch jazz: pianist Peter Beets and arranger Henk Meutgeert. This new big band consists of top tier young jazz talents from the Netherlands. French jazz vocalist Camille Bertault came into the public eye after she penned French lyrics to saxophonist John Coltrane’s famous song Giant Steps, and, most impressively, sang Coltrane’s solo by heart in a YouTube video. A feat of extraordinary technical ability and serious improvisational skill!
 
17:29Julie Campiche - Schaffhauser Jazz Festival 2018
The line-up of the Julie Campiche Quartet is unconventional to say the least: Julie Campiche on harp, Leo Fumagalli on saxophone, Manu Hagmann on bass, and Clemens Kuratle on drums and percussion, with Kuratle deftly incorporating electronics into their individual sound. To say that the quartet takes its listeners on a musical journey is not an overstatement. During two performances (Campiche’s “Onkalo” and Kuratle’s “To The Holy Land”) from the Schaffhauser Jazz Festival on May 24, 2018, the Quartet slowly develops hypnotic grooves that features all the jazz sensibilities fans could wish for while still pushing the boundaries of what constitutes jazz.
 
17:58Belgium Sessions: Free Desmyter
In this DJAZZ Belgium Sessions performance, which was recorded at AED Studios in Lint, Belgium, we witness Europe’s finest jazz musicians at work. A wide variety of international jazz musicians give a creative, up-close and inside insight into their art of playing jazz music. Young talent and established jazz musicians play to their heart’s content: take for instance this unusual performance by the Free Desmyter Quartet. Desmyter is an obstinate improviser with a very original and recognisable sound. His compositions are never contrived, nor revolutionary, for that matter, yet they are contemporary and innovative.
 
18:45Casper the Funky Ghost: Bootsy Collins à Vienne
Bootsy Collins, famed for playing with George Clinton and his very own Rubber Band, is used to playing syncopated, hard and relentlessly rhythmic music. With this unique style Bootsy was a major influence on the development of funk. Now in his 60s, the bassist seems animated by a new energy that reflects his new work on the album ‘Tha Funk Capitol of the World’. With this album, Bootsy Collins pays tribute to the artists with whom he worked during his frantic career: from James Brown and Parliament-Funkadelic to Fatboy Slim. During this concert, recorded at the festival Jazz à Vienne, Bootsy maintains that same energy, giving a spectacular show.
 
20:17How Deep Is The Ocean
Two top-tier Belgian musicians – guitarist Philip Catherine and bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse – accompany American jazz trumpeter and vocalist Chet Baker during this 1985 performance at the beautiful Brussels Jazz Club, located on the Grand-Place, the Belgian capital’s central square. The trio plays Charlie Mariano’s “Crystal Bells”, the title track of their acclaimed 1983 album. Other songs played during this legendary concert include “Down” and “How Deep is the Ocean”.

Since 2005, the Morgenland Festival, held in Osnabrueck, has dedicated itself to the fascinating music culture of the Near and Middle East. George Shearing, blind since birth, is one of the world's greatest jazz pianists. Filmed on both sides of the Atlantic, this tribute to Shearing showcases the music which took the jazz world by storm. Specially-shot performances and archive clips feature music spanning the six decades of his remarkable career and classics such as ‘September in the Rain’, ‘Lullaby of Birdland’, ‘Greensleeves’, ‘Donna Lee’ and ‘Freedom Jazz Dance’ are included, as well as many other recent compositions.

The world-renowned North Sea Jazz Festival features a wide variety of genres, including traditional New Orleans jazz, swing, bop, free jazz, fusion, avant-garde and electronic jazz, blues, gospel, funk, soul, R&B, hip hop, world beat and Latin. The festival was founded by entrepreneur and jazz fan Paul Acket, who sold his highly successful pop magazine publishing house to organize and fund the first edition of the festival in 1976. Legendary African-American folk singer Odetta (1930-2008) sang her spirituals with immeasurable sorrow and anguish. Her spiritual music expresses the horrific impact of slavery on millions of African people stolen from their homeland. For Odetta, folk music—be it spirituals, blues or field songs—was a vehicle for expressing the racism and injustice experienced by black people dating back to the days of slavery. This 1964 episode of Face au Public shows the melancholy of the era.

01:00The Garifuna Collektive - WOMEX 2018
Since 1994, World Music Expo (WOMEX) has been attracting musicians, agents, a great number of press agencies, as well as media companies from all over the world. Its main exposition event has been held in various locations throughout Europe, including Berlin, Brussels, Marseille, Stockholm, Seville, Cardiff, and Budapest. In 2018, WOMEX was held in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. One of its showcase participants, The Garifuna Collective, carries the legacy of Andy Palacio who not only put the music of Belize on the world stage, it also inspired a generation of Belizean musicians to look to their roots. Featuring an intergenerational line-up and the rousing vocal prowess of the Umalali women singers, they celebrate the deep cultural roots of Garifuna music, with the emblematic sound of the two traditional Garifuna drums – the primero and the segunda – along with maracas, turtle shells, jawbones and acoustic and electric guitars and bass grooves.

02:37Episode 4: Stan Getz - Jazz Greats
American jazz tenor saxophonist Stan Getz (1927-1991) was nicknamed "The Sound" for his warm, lyrical tone. Performing in bebop and cool jazz groups, he popularized bossa nova in America with the hit 'The Girl from Ipanema'. In the summer of 1983, Getz brought his working quartet to the Robert Mondavi Winery, Napa Valley, California, for a set that included Over The Edge, Answer Without Question, Sippin' At Bells, Tempus Fugit, and a bossa nova medley of Desafinado and The Girl From Ipanema. Getz (tenor saxophone) is joined by bassist Marc Johnson, drummer Victor Lewis, and pianist Jim McNeely.

Art Farmer: Live in '64 highlights an amazing one-hour concert featuring the great flugelhornist in his prime. Farmer’s band includes legendary guitarist Jim Hall (fresh from Sonny Rollins’ band), drummer Pete LaRoca, and Steve Swallow on bass. The legendary ensemble plays both standards and originals with ease and finesse and highlights why Farmer was considered one of the most innovative horn players in all of jazz.
 
05:23Lindyhop.lt, Vilnius, Lithuania
Lithuanian band Olivia Gongas gave an intimate performance at Vilnius jazz dance club Lindyhop.lt in late June 2021. The band, fronted by multi-instrumentalist Remis Rančys, consists of guitarist Laimonas Jančas, bassist Paulius Adomėnas, and drummer Domantas Razmus. Olivia Gongas draw from the band’s indie and world music inspirations for this mellow and cosy concert. The Lindyhop.lt has been Lithuania’s longest running jazz dance venue, in operation since 2003. Located in Vilnius, the country's capital city, it features an in-house jazz band that performs arrangements from the rich history of New Orleans jazz, the golden era of swing, and hot club-style jazz.
 
05:59Seine Sessions: Funk & Afro
The term "jam-session" was born in the 1920s, when black and white musicians gathered in smoke-filled bars after their respective concerts to enjoy the kind of jazz they could not play in traditional sets. Bing Crosby was a regular at these sessions, and had fun marking the first and third beats of musical phrases by clapping hands, which the musicians call "jammin' the beat". Today, the Seine Sessions revive the happy years of "jam sessions", while the cream of jazz, blues, gipsy and funk Parisian scenes occurs on the boards of the legendary restaurant and jazz club Le Réservoir. Entitled "Funk & Afro", this episode hosted by Eddy King features unique performances by artists playing together for the first time, and interviews with Cool Jam, Bibi Tanga, Kingsy Ray, and many others.
 
06:37The Morgenland Festival: Blossom
Since 2005, the Morgenland Festival of Osnabrueck has dedicated itself to the fascinating music culture of the Near and Middle East. From traditional and classical music to avant-garde, jazz, and rock, the festival program also features art, such as visual arts, dance, and theatre of interdisciplinary projects. The Morgenland Chamber Orchestra has been an integral part of the Morgenland Festival since 2009. This ensemble of musicians from Germany and various guest countries performs as part of the festival's opening concert. This episode includes performances sometimes energetic, sometimes soft and soothing.
