17:25Trio Chemirani: Dawâr | Acum la TV
The veritable tombak virtuosos of Trio Chemirani, consisting of Chemirani Senior and Juniors, enrapture the Festival de Saintes. The tombak is a Persian percussion instrument, but its rhythms are universal. The Trio Chemirani’s music is accessible to all and will certainly resound with each listener. The members of the trio, Djamchid Chemirani (born in Teheran in 1942) and his two sons and pupils Keyvan and Bijan, are living in France. Their concert performances bring them all over the world, as they explore the endless potential of their Persian percussion instruments. The trio finds also inspiration in Mediterranean modal music and jazz. These three musicians, who might well be thought of as poets, are in search of a common language that connects several cultures.
 
18:34Shalosh: Rules of Oppression
The Israeli-New York band Shalosh offers raw acoustic progressive jazz, which has attracted international attention since the release of their first album. Despite the classic jazz format of the trio (piano, bass, and drums) and the band's deep roots in jazz and improvised music, Shalosh follows its own path, inspired by various styles: rock, classical music, electro, African music, and Middle Eastern music. The members of Shalosh have a connection not only through music, but also through a lifelong friendship. The three musicians recently put their international solo career on hold to perform as Shalosh.
 
20:01Conservatory Concert Big Band
As part of the International Duke Ellington Conference 2014, we welcome the Concert Big Band of the Conservatory of Amsterdam for a special concert. Under the direction of David Berger, they will play Duke Ellington’s only written big band symphony, ‘Black, Brown and Beige’. It has been more than 70 years since Ellington’s “B, B & B” was played in its entirety during its premiere at Carnegie Hall (New York). Duke Ellington said the following about it: “We thought we wouldn’t play it in its entirety tonight because it represents an awfully long and important story and that I don’t think too many people are familiar with the story. This is the one we dedicate to the 700 Negroes who came from Haiti to save Savannah during the Revolutionary War.” Jazz composer, trumpeter, arranger and conductor David Berger is internationally recognized as the expert on Duke Ellington's music and music from the swing era. From 1988 to 1994, he worked for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra where he transcribed more than 500 pieces by Ellington and Billy Strayhorn.

21:02Ella Fitzgerald in Brussels: The American Songbook
‘Ella Fitzgerald: Live in '57’ features ‘The First Lady Of Song’ in a distinct performance. It's the earliest known complete concert of Ella to be captured on film. Shot in Belgium, this 1957 concert sees her performing with jazz greats Ray Brown, Herb Ellis, Jo Jones and the legendary Oscar Peterson on classics such as ‘Lullaby Of Birdland’ and ‘It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)’. Although she wanted to be a dancer at first, Ella Fitzgerald already listened to recordings of Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby and The Boswell Sisters at an early age. After her debut at an amateur talent show in 1934, Ella joined Chick Webb’s Orchestra with which she recorded several hits; after Webb died, she became the leader of the orchestra. In the late 1940s, Ella Fitzgerald became known as the ‘First Lady of Song’, with her wide vocal range of three octaves. The American jazz singer was particularly appreciated for her pure tone, intonation and phrasing, and unparalleled improvisational abilities. In a career that spanned close to 60 years, Fitzgerald sold 40 million albums and won 13 Grammy Awards, mainly for her definitive interpretations of the Great American Songbook.

22:25Patáx: A Night to Remember 2/2
Patáx was heavily influenced by seminal fusion bands like Weather Report and Return to Forever. Don’t mistake this Spanish powerhouse for a carbon copy of either, however, as Patáx presents an accomplished mix of styles, including soul, jazz, funk and hip-hop. The group is led by the passionate Spanish-American percussionist Jorge Perez, who draws his musical influence from both sides of the Atlantic. The tight interplay between Perez and his bandmates as well as the audience’s enthusiasm at Teatro Calderón in Madrid make it a night to remember. This is the second of two parts.

Belgian singer-songwriter Selah Sue performed at La Cigale in Paris as part of the digital Culturebox Festival 2020. The singer released her million-selling debut album 'Selah Sue' in March 2011, featuring her popular single 'Raggamuffin' and her duet 'Please' with American hip-hop artist Cee Lo Green. Months after its release, Selah was presented with a European Border Breakers Award (EBBA), for her cross-border success. At La Cigale in 2020, Selah Sue is accompanied by Joachim Saerens on keyboard and Simon Lenski on cello, opening her concert with a jazzed-up 'So This Is Love', a romantic ballad from Walt Disney’s film 'Cinderella'.

Vocalist Jazzmeia Horn’s 2019 Malta Jazz Festival appearance was a celebration of jazz’s future, infused with the soul of its past. Featuring Keith Brown (piano), Rashaan Carter (bass), Irwin Hall (flute and saxophone), and Anwar Marshall (drums), the young singer’s performance was a reminder of jazz’s enduring power to speak to the heart. Situated at the Valletta waterfront outside Our Lady of Liesse Church, Horn’s concert was a truly spellbinding experience.

In 2018, WOMEX was held in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. One of its showcase participants, Lucibela, comes from the island of São Nicolau. 01:57Guy Salamon Group - jazzahead!
Annual trade fair, exhibition, and festival jazzahead! is one of the international jazz community’s most important events. Hosted in Bremen, Germany, jazzahead! brings together musicians, bookers, agents, organizers, jazz experts, and music enthusiasts at the world’s largest jazz event. In 2024, jazzahead! paid special attention to the jazz scene of the Netherlands and invited over forty jazz acts to perform over the course of three days. Among the acts presenting themselves at jazzahead! 2024 is the Guy Salamon Group, playing repertoire from their album ‘FREE HUGS’. This third release by the Amsterdam-based artist with his octet explores the tales of The Egg-X people, set in a whimsically absurd reality. Expect a vibrant mix of styles, from swing and punk to polka, which creates a dynamic musical carousel. The lineup includes Guy Salamon (drums), Alistair Payne (trumpet), José Soares (alto saxophone), Lucas Martinez (tenor saxophone), Jesse Schilderink (baritone saxophone), Xavi Torres (piano) ,Teis Semey (guitar), and Brodie Jarvie (bass).

Annual trade fair, exhibition, and festival jazzahead! is one of the international jazz community's most important events. Hosted in Bremen, Germany, jazzahead! brings together musicians, bookers, agents, organizers, jazz experts, and music enthusiasts at the world’s largest jazz event. In 2022, jazzahead! paid special attention to Canada’s jazz scene and invited forty jazz acts from all over the world to perform over the course of three days. One of the bands appearing at jazzahead! 2022 is J.D.HIVE, an audacious quartet led by Austrian violinist and radio.string.quartet.vienna founding member Johannes Dickbauer. Dickbauer is accompanied by pianist Sebastian Schneider, bassist Andreas Waelti, and percussionist András Dés. Playfully fusing classical, folk, jazz and rock elements, the foursome’s music is characterized by an unmistakable spirit of adventure.

Rotterdam’s BIRD is a club, café, and restaurant with a live music program that's deeply rooted in jazz, soul, funk, hip-hop, and electronic. Its name BIRD refers to the nickname of legendary New York jazz saxophonist, bebop co-founder Charlie Parker. BIRD serves Neapolitan pizzas, fine wines, no-nonsense beers, and an all-round metropolitan rawness. Since 2014, this urban jazz club and DJAZZ.tv have been collaborating for a series of music programs: BIRD.tv, allowing you to experience the best BIRD concerts and interviews as from a first-row seat! Discover an irresistible live act; STUFF is full of unflagging energy. The Belgian band was founded in 2012 when drummer Lander Gyselinck was asked to play live music between DJ sets at a local bar. He gathered a bunch of friends, who also were musicians. The band could be considered an avant-garde jazz band who play a mix of funk, hip-hop, and electro. Andrew Claes (saxophone), Dries Laheye (bass guitar), Lander Gyselinck (drums), Mixmonster Menno (samples), and Joris Caluwaerts (keyboards) share an exceptional connection in music. They take over every stage and melt the hearts of music lovers.

A jazz festival named after the inventor of the instrument most associated with the genre, Adolphe Sax, would be incomplete without the man who laid the groundwork for how the instrument is played today. This must have been the reasoning of the organizers of the Festival International de Jazz Adolphe Sax in Dinant, Belgium, when they invited tenor saxophone giant Coleman Hawkins to perform there in June 1962. Appearing with a group that includes the French pianist George Arvanitas, one-time Duke Ellington bassist Jimmy Woode, and expat drummer Kansas Fields, the musician also known as ‘Bean’ and ‘Hawk’ serves up an hour-long set of familiar standards bookended by Hank Jones’ “Chant” and J. J. Johnson’s “Wee Dot”.

Thomas Carbou and Jeff Moran share an almost telepathic rapport, blending spontaneous improvisation, electronic looping, and Brazilian and Indian musical influences to create ecstatic groove pieces and dream-like soundscapes. They use a wide array of instruments, including a custom-built 8-string guitar, cuatro, bouzouki, cajón, frame drums, berimbau, udu, and metal percussion instruments, as well as samplers and laptops, adding their own hypnotic vocals to the mix.

Lex Jasper Trio: Happy Days Are Here Again - the title says is all… After an automobile accident and 15 years of revalidation, he is back! Together with his musical pals Edwin Corzilius (double bass) and Frits Landesbergen (drums), pianist and composer Lex Jasper celebrates his return to jazz club The Duke in the Dutch village of Nistelrode. Following his car accident, Lex nearly joined the leagues of Netherland's “forgotten” jazz heroes, though he is still considered one of the most important artists and composers of his generation and Dutch jazz history. Jasper played and recorded with all the greats, including Toots Thielemans, Clark Terry, Joe Pass, and Rita Reys.
