Every year, the Jazz en Baie festival takes place in the beautiful bay of Mont Saint-Michel Today’s broadcast shows a special gathering between two grandmasters of French jazz: pianist Jacky Terrasson and trumpeter Stéphane Belmondo. The two team up for an amazing concert in which jazz is combined with soul and a touch of chanson française. The Franco-American pianist Terrasson delights in travelling the world, collaboration with others and leading his own trio, quartet, or quintet. With his long-time friend, Stéphane Belmondo, Terrasson has produced wonderful CDs and beautiful concerts. One then finds the trumpeter on the pianist’s album ‘Gouache’; on another, the pianist guests on Belmondo’s ‘Ever After’. At the Jazz en Baie festival, the duo plays its amazing piano and trumpet music. Highly recommended! | |

In the 1960s, composer Michel Magne transformed the Château d'Hérouville, an 18th-century country house north of Paris and former home of lovers George Sand and Frédéric Chopin, into the first residential recording studio. In addition to its excellent facilities, the complex featured a swimming pool and a beautiful garden, allowing artists to stay for weeks or months at a time. From David Bowie and Iggy Pop to Pink Floyd and Chet Baker, countless stars recorded unforgettable music here until the studio closed in the 1980s. Three decades later, Château d'Hérouville has reopened its doors. This program follows American baritone Gregory Porter as he collaborates with the British electro-pop band Metronomy. The former American football player, who later dedicated himself entirely to music, gives an interview at Hérouville and performs songs including ‘Don't Loose Your Steam’, ‘In Fashion’, and ‘Sunny’. The British band Metronomy contributes songs such as ‘The Look’, ‘Night Owl’, and ‘Mick Slow’. Metronomy consists of Joseph Mount (drums), Oscar Cash (saxophone, keys), and Michael Lovett (keys). Gregory Porter’s own band consists of Lakecia Benjamin (saxophone), Chip Crawford (piano), Jahmal Nichols (bass guitar), and Emanuel Harrold (drums). | |

Annual trade fair, exhibition, and festival jazzahead! is one of the international jazz community's most important events. Hosted in Bremen, Germany, jazzahead! brings together musicians, bookers, agents, organizers, jazz experts, and music enthusiasts at the world’s largest jazz event. In 2022, jazzahead! paid special attention to Canada’s jazz scene and invited forty jazz acts from all over the world to perform over the course of three days. One of the bands appearing at jazzahead! 2022 is the Ofer Mizrahi Trio, performing their trademark fusion of jazz, folk and Eastern music. Guitarist, trumpeter and vocalist Ofer Mizrahi studied with Pt. Budhadev Das Gupta, one of India’s notable masters of Hindustani music. Mizrahi designed and built his own 24-string Whale Guitar, a modified Indian slide guitar, combining acoustic and electronic sounds and layered overtones. He is joined by cellist Mayu Shviro and double bassist David Michaeli. | |

Guitarist, composer and director Marnix Busstra loves crossing borders. He travels the world with his jazz bands, plays guitar and bouzouki, writes jazz and theatre-songs, and co-creates and directs the exuberant theatre shows of his wife, the Dutch diva Karin Bloemen. Busstra is a constant wheel of invention, with technique expanded by his creative urge to find something new, an evolving state that adds immeasurably to his art. The Marnix Busstra Band was founded in 2011 by its namesake. Joined by piano talent Rembrandt Frerichs, the ever creative double bassist Arnold Dooyeweerd and the inspirational force of drummer Pieter Bast, Busstra introduces a unique band that will definitely help broaden the jazz horizon. Marnix’ compositions are the starting point of the band. Musically, this band is a continuation of a development started by the quartet that Marnix co-leads with the renowned vibraphonist, Mike Mainieri. The result can best be described as lyrical, multifaceted jazz that centres around the profound interplay of the four musicians. | |

World-class Dutch jazz pianist Peter Beets has shared the stage with jazz greats Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, “Toots” Thielemans, Elvin Jones, George Coleman, Johnny Griffin, Benny Golson, and John Clayton. His mother a music teacher and his father an Oscar Peterson and Art Blakey enthusiast, Beets was surrounded by music from an early age. And though music was in their blood, neither parent associated the word “musician” with a career. In this broadcast, Peter Beets teams up with Anton Goudsmit (guitar) in tribute to guitar icon and founding father of modern jazz Wes Montgomery. The two men share a passion for Montgomery's music, his compositions forming the basis for Goudsmit’s energetic and eccentric solos and Beets's virtuoso piano playing. They are backed by a grooving rhythm section featuring Marius Beets (bass) and Joost van Schaik (drums). | |

The term "jam-session" was born in the 1920s, when black and white musicians gathered in smoke-filled bars after their respective concerts to enjoy the kind of jazz they could not play in traditional sets. Bing Crosby was a regular at these sessions, and had fun marking the first and third beats of musical phrases by clapping hands, which the musicians call "jammin' the beat". Today, the Seine Sessions revive the happy years of "jam sessions", while the cream of jazz, blues, gipsy and funk Parisian scenes occurs on the boards of the legendary restaurant and jazz club Le Réservoir. The Brazilian bossa-nova and samba singer gives an outstanding, swinging performance at Estival Lugano. The band features Marcello Gilberto, David Sacks, Gil Goldstein, and Eduardo da Fonseca. In 2018, WOMEX was held in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. This ten-piece ensemble from Germany plays vibrant acoustic reinterpretations of electronic pieces from their 2019 album ‘Time Rewind’, reinventing the vocal jazz ensemble for the modern age. Their 2022 album ‘Lily of The Nile’ has been released on renowned guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel’s record label Heartcore Records. Among the acts presenting themselves at jazzahead! 2024 is Boi Akih. The ensemble, led by vocalist and 2023 Boy Edgar Prize winner Monica Akihary, presents Niels Brouwer’s composition ‘From and to Infinity’. This four-movement piece is inspired by the Island of Ambon and explores themes of connection and contrast through its musical narrative. This performance features a diverse instrumentation including organs, recorders, kora, guitar, and vocals, blending traditional and contemporary sounds. The ensemble includes Nora Mulder on portative organ and analogue synth, Hungarian recorder player Dodó Kis, kora player Sekou Dioubate from Guinea, and percussionist Bintou Kouyate, also from Guinea. | |

Moondog, a gaunt, mysterious and extravagantly-garbed blind street musician was celebrated among New Yorkers for two decades before gaining acclaim in Europe as an avant-garde composer conducting orchestras before royalty. Artists such as Charlie Parker, Leonard Bernstein, Steve Reich and Philip Glass have called him one of the great musical visionaries of our century. Day in and day out, the man whose real name is Louis T. Hardin, was as taciturn and unchanging a landmark of the midtown Manhattan streetscape as the George M. Cohan statue in Duffy Square. No matter the weather, he invariably dressed in a homemade robe, sandals, a flowing cape, and a horned Viking helmet - the tangible expression of what he referred to as his “Nordic philosophy”. For this show, he teams up with renowned saxophone ensemble London Saxophonic for an eccentric performance. | |
