Many of pianist Chick Corea’s compositions have become jazz standards. As a member of Miles Davis' band in the late 1960s, he participated in the birth of the electric jazz fusion movement. In the 1970s, Corea founded the legendary jazz fusion group Return to Forever. Along with Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner and Keith Jarrett, Corea is one of the biggest modern jazz pianists. He continued musical collaborations with a diverse range of artists, exploring various musical styles. This broadcast features three performances that illustrate Chick Corea's many talents.

Unlike many of his fellow jazz cats, vocalist Gregory Porter transcends the jazz bubble. After sustaining a shoulder injury, this former American football player turned to jazz singing. He was discovered in a Californian jazz club by pianist, saxophonist and composer Kamau Kenyatta. Porter lent his vocal skills to gospel choirs across the country and a string of successful musicals before turning his talent to his own compositions. His rise since then has been meteoric. Porter’s magnificent, burnished baritone can sink into a lyric with luxurious ease, the melody gently sculpted into new shapes at every turn, with the rhythm tugging subtly back and forth across the bar line. This live performance at the Olympia showcases this man's worth, and is a truly amazing experience!

The Newport Jazz Festival, first established in the North-American town of Newport, Rhode Island in the summer of 1954, has now grown to become one of the largest multi-day celebrations of jazz worldwide. It has resulted in numerous famous live albums from top-rate jazz stars, and has spawned several worldwide tours, including editions of the Newport Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. In October 1968, two former colleagues met again on stage, this time leading their own bands at the Newport Jazz Festival in Rotterdam: drummer Art Blakey and pianist Horace Silver were both co-founders of The Jazz Messengers.

Although its music might sound like the soundtrack of any 1970s American car chase movie, the band Sven Hammond Soul is from the Netherlands. This steaming soul machine is headed by Sven Figee, who prefers to attack rather than play his Hammond organ. In April 2012, the band was augmented with vocalist Jenny Lane. Today’s recordings were made at a steaming live performance at Utrecht’s Tivoli in 2012.

02:21jazzahead! 2022 - Fuchsthone Orchestra
Annual trade fair, exhibition, and festival jazzahead! is one of the international jazz community's most important events. Hosted in Bremen, Germany, jazzahead! brings together musicians, bookers, agents, organizers, jazz experts, and music enthusiasts at the world’s largest jazz event. In 2022, jazzahead! paid special attention to Canada’s jazz scene and invited forty jazz acts from all over the world to perform over the course of three days. Possibly the largest ensemble performing at jazzahead! 2022, the Fuchsthone Orchestra was founded by conductors and composers Christina Fuchs and Caroline Thon in 2018. This spectacular Cologne-based orchestra, which is comprised of twenty-two outstanding artists, offers an exciting experimental new sound that stretches the conventional limits of the traditional big band. The rhythm section of pianist Laia Genc, guitarist Andreas Wahl, bassist Alexander Morsey, drummer Jens Düppe, and electronics artist Eva Pöpplein is augmented by saxophonists Roger Hanschel, Theresia Philipp, Matthew Halpin, Jens Böckamp, and Susanne Weidinger, trumpeters Christian Mehler, Matthias Knoop, John-Dennis Renken, and Matthias Bergmann, trombonists Philipp Schittek, Matthias Schuller, Matthias Muche, and Wolf Schenk, vocalist Filippa Gojo, and violinist Zuzana Leharovà.

Among the ensembles presenting themselves at jazzahead! 2024 is Amsterdam’s 12-piece Marmoucha Orchestra. In collaboration with Moroccan guembri virtuoso Mehdi Nasouli, they present their vibrant project ‘Sonic Bridges’. Established in 2002, Marmoucha has been at the forefront of projects that celebrate the cultural heritage of North Africa and the Middle East, aiming to connect a diverse array of artists and audiences. Mehdi Nasouli brings his deep passion for Moroccan music and his dynamic presence to this partnership, which melds Gnawa traditions with Western musical techniques. The full lineup consists of Arin Keshishi (bass, artistic director, arranger), Mehdi Nassouli (vocals, guembri), Maripepa Contreras (oboe, arranger), Tuur Moens (drums), Timothy Banchet (keys), Antonio Moreno Glazkov (trumpet), Pablo Martinez (trombone), Mohamed Ahaddaf (oud), María Cristina González (flute), Emad Ghajjou (darbuka), Yishay Aharon Glück (guitar), and Ahmed Hammou and Khalid Ezzahiri (krakebs, background vocals).
 
03:30MotorMusic Jazz Sessions: WRaP!
The MotorMusic Studios in Mechelen, Belgium, attract many great musicians to the city. A wide variety of visiting international jazz musicians share their art of making jazz music with us in the DJAZZ series ‘Belgium Sessions’. In these sessions, some of Europe’s finest musicians perform their own, original music. This episode MotorMusic invites the jazz trio ‘WRaP!’, consisting of singer Barbara Wiernik, guitarist Alain Pierre, and Chet Baker’s former bassist: Jean-Louis Rassinfosse. The trio plays one of their most beautiful compositions of ‘Endless’. In this fine composition, Wiernik’s beautiful voice, Pierre’s crystal chords of the 12-string guitar, and the warm sounds of the contrabass come to full bloom.

Raul Midón appeared at 2017’s Sing Jazz Festival in Singapore with double bassist Romeir Mendez and drummer Billy Williams. Blind since birth, Raul Midón is a singer, guitarist, and songwriter from New Mexico. With a vocal range as dynamic as his guitar playing and a remarkable talent for trumpet mimicry, Midón’s performances transcend musical boundaries, effortlessly blending rock, jazz, folk, and Latin pop into his unique sound. He has worked with numerous legends, including Bill Withers, Herbie Hancock, Sting, and Dianne Reeves, and his album ‘Bad Ass and Blind’ was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2018. No wonder the Sing Jazz audience were ecstatic!
 
05:21Kurt Rosenwinkel - Bandit 65
Jazzfest Bonn is an annual festival of modern and creative jazz music. Every May it presents local and international jazz musicians in concert halls all over the German city. Among the artists of the 2017 edition is Bandit 65, a trio of breathtaking virtuosity, great power, boundless breadth, and astounding beauty. Together with Tim Motzer on guitar and electronics, and Gintas Janusonis on drums and percussion, guitarist and band leader Kurt Rosenwinkel explores the intersection of guitars, rhythm, electronics, soundscapes, free improvisation, and telepathic interplay.
 
06:36Carla Bley Sextet live at Estival Lugano 1986
Since 1977, Estival is a summer jazz festival in Switzerland, Lugano. Estival offers a thrilling and particularly surprising line-up that explores the rich world of contemporary music whilst promoting the understanding of different cultures, tolerance, and co-existence. Discover the special bond between pianist Carla Bley and bassist Steve Swallow. The two have performed in the same bands since the '60s and have been romantic partners for more than two decades. Watching them perform is the definition of musical telepathy. Together with musicians Wayne Krantz, Victor Lewis, Larry Willis, and Don Alias, they form an amazing sextet at Estival in 1986.
