07:01The Hammond© Sessions: Dede Priest
The Dutch Hammond organ player Rob Mostert develops, in cooperation with Stingray DJAZZ, the program Mostert Meets. In this series, the Hammond B3 organ takes center stage. Rob Mostert invites the world’s finest jazz musicians for a musical collaboration, in which the Hammond Organ plays a major role. The Hammond B3 is an electric organ, which generates sound by creating an electric current from rotating a metal tone wheel near an electromagnetic pickup. Initially, the Hammond B3 was at home in churches, until it entered the jazz scene in the mid-20th century. In this episode, Mostert teams up with the Dallas-born vocalist Dede Priest. She’s renowned for her raw sound. She knows how to sing blues and gospel like no other!
 
08:00Tel Aviv Sessions: Omri Mor
The bustling streets of Tel Aviv resonate in the music of the new generation of Israeli jazz artists, who are making a big impression in the jazz scene. The DJAZZ series ‘Tel Aviv Sessions’ is the thermometer of jazz in Israel in the first decade of the 2000s.The concerts featured in this series were recorded at several Tel Aviv jazz clubs, featuring some of the very best and freshest jazz bands. The series offers an eye-witness account of the incredible inventiveness and diversity of the Israeli jazz scene. With his passion and his virtuosity, pianist Omri Mor amazes the audience of the music club Zappa in Tel Aviv. Pieces drawn from the heritage of the Mediterranean basin and arranged by Omri Mor provide, emerge and result in a phenomenal creativity. This concert might become historical as one of the first filmed concerts of a future giant piano jazz player.
 
09:05Chamber music: Sissoko & Segal
Hailing from a long tradition of Malian kora players, Ballake Sissoko has worked with renowned musicians such as Toumani Diabaté and Taj Mahal. He met the French born Vincent Ségal by chance, and the two began jamming together, uncertain of what kind of music might result. As a former member of the French National Orchestra, Ségal's Western classical training does not prevent him from exploring a wide variety of extended techniques, rendering his cello a flexible partner to Sissoko's kora. A childhood spent in the Pigalle district of Paris surrounded by immigrant communities exposed Ségal to African music from an early age. As such, he possesses a natural sensitivity to Sissoko's West-African style. The concert shows a brilliant interplay between the two musicians and combines the several worlds of jazz, Malian and classical music.
 
10:08The Sound of New York - Stefon Harris
The series The Sound of New York. Music Today and Tomorrow is an exploration of the musical universe of a new generation of New York artists. Of diverse origins and all having a unique history and background, these musicians gave birth to a new sound that influences the music scene around the world. This new generation of artists combines sounds of yesterday and today, interacts with a range of other artistic forms, and plays with many influences, from Afro-American music to classical and contemporary music through hip-hop, R&B, rock, and so much more. The passionate play, the energetic stage presence and the amazing virtuosity of vibraphonist Stefon Harris have propelled him to the forefront of the current jazz scene. Largely praised by his peers and critics alike, Harris's mission is to explore the rich potential of jazz composition and popularize the vibraphone. Harris has appeared alongside several jazz luminaries including Kenny Barron, Steve Turre, Kurt Elling and Charlie Hunter, and has released several albums that have been warmly received by critics. With a bachelor's and master's degree from New York's Manhattan School of Music, Harris credits his successful career with high school teachers, who quickly recognized his passion for music, and offered him lessons and the chance to bring the instruments home: "My musical education and the opportunities I had to perform in ensembles such as the Empire State Youth Orchestra exposed me to other cultures and to a variety of musical styles". Harris is the creator of Harmony Cloud, an application to help beginners and professionals alike develop their ears, deepen their understanding of harmony, and explore the world of improvisation. In 2016, he was named director of the prestigious Jazz Arts Program at the Manhattan School of Music. Harris has performed around the world and his discography has six albums.
 
11:03North Sea Jazz Cruise
Marcus Miller arrives at the port and boards the world's largest jazz club: MS Rotterdam! A special day awaits... For the first time, a cruise sets sail to Copenhagen, Gothenburg and Warnmünde, Oslo and Hamburg, to arrive in Rotterdam in time for the opening night of the prestigious North Sea Jazz Festival. This documentary shows the goings-on on board, where all the greats of modern jazz perform, including McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, John Scofield, Dee Dee Bridgewater, James Carter, David Sanborn, Roy Hargrove, Kirk Whalum, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Lionel Loueke, Roberta Gambarini and DJ Logic.
 
11:53Nelida Karr - WOMEX 2018
Since 1994, World Music Expo (WOMEX) has been attracting musicians, agents, a great number of press agencies, as well as media companies from all over the world. Its main exposition event has been held in various locations throughout Europe, including Berlin, Brussels, Marseille, Stockholm, Seville, Cardiff, and Budapest. In 2018, WOMEX was held in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. One of its showcase participants, Nelida Karr, sings and plays guitar, piano, cello and percussion. She writes songs suffused with the many influences she assimilated growing up in Malabo in Africa’s only Spanish-speaking country, Equatorial Guinea. The result is an eclectic mix that she nevertheless incorporates into a sound all her own.
 
12:35Jong Metropole live at Radio Kootwijk
Jong Metropole (Young Metropole) is a unique collaboration between the Dutch Metropole Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands and the National Jazz Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands. It aims to prepare talented, young musicians in classical and light music for a professional career. Jong Metropole blends the best of different music genres, borrowing from the performance strength of classical strings to the swing, improvisation, and timing of jazz, and more. Conducted by Christian Elsässer, this special performance was recorded at the former radio transmission station, Kootwijk.

15:00Christian Scott - Jazz a Vienne 2017
‘Jazz a Vienne’ is one of the world's most prestigious jazz festivals. Ever since 1981, it has attracted leading jazz artists, with many of them playing return engagements. Unsurprisingly, the festival's 2017 edition did not fall short of expectations: the lineup was filled with the biggest names in music. One of them is Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, a Grammy Award-nominee who played with artists such as Robert Glasper, Marcus Miller, and Thom Yorke. The American trumpeter blends jazz fusion, hip-hop and alternative rock, developing a unique and distinct sound. Scott’s performance at the festival’s main stage, the ancient Roman theatre, was one of 2017's festival highlight.

Every year, the Jazz en Baie festival takes place in the beautiful bay of Mont Saint-Michel. Today’s broadcast shows a special gathering between saxophone heavyweights Peter King and Steve Grossman. These experienced musicians’ trip to the bay amounts to much more than a social call. The quintet, which is rounded out by bass player Duylinh N'Guyen, drummer Stéphane Huchard and pianist Alain Jean-Marie, delivers an amazing show. Although the two saxophonists have an average age of 70, these jazz titans will convince you you’re watching young musicians on stage – albeit with 70 years of experience.

Since 1977, Estival is a summer jazz festival in Switzerland, Lugano. Estival offers a thrilling and particularly surprising line-up that explores the rich world of contemporary music whilst promoting the understanding of different cultures, tolerance, and co-existence. The 29th Street Saxophone Quartet is an American quartet founded in 1982 by alto saxophonists Bobby Watson and Ed Jackson, tenor saxophonist Rich Rothenberg and baritone saxophonist Jim Hartog. The band has an eclectic repertoire ranging from jazz to show, funk, rap, and experimental music.
 
18:30Scott DuBois Quartet Live In Munich
Rising star of the jazz guitar Scott DuBois leads his quartet, consisting of Gebhard Ullmann (reeds), Thomas Morgan (bass), and Kresten Osgood (drums), in an intimate and atmospheric performance at Munich’s Jazz Club Unterfahrt in March 2016. The group’s telepathy is such that they are able to go from deathly quiet to fiercely avant-garde at the drop of a hat. For this occasion, DuBois and his group gave a full performance of his "Winter Light" album, released a few months earlier, plus his 'Lake Shore Suite'.

Rotterdam’s ‘ BIRD’ is a club, café and restaurant with a live music programme that's deeply rooted in jazz, and also branches out towards soul, funk, hip-hop and electronic music as well. Its name ‘BIRD’ refers to the nickname of the legendary New York jazz saxophonist, bebop co-founder Charlie Parker (1920-1955). BIRD serves Neapolitan pizzas, good wines, no-nonsense beers and an all-round metropolitan rawness. Since 2014, this urban jazz club and DJAZZ.tv have been collaborating for a series of music programmes: ‘BIRD.tv’, allowing you to experience the best BIRD concerts and interviews as from a first row seat! In this episode, our guest is an old-timer from African music: the saxophonist and composer Orlando Julius (*1943). Doubtlessly, he is royalty among Nigerian musicians. In his music, Julius combines highlife, jazz, soul, and R&B in ground-breaking ways.

Although its music might sound like the sound track of any 1970s American car chase movie, the band Sven Hammond Soul is from the Netherlands. This steaming soul machine is headed by Sven Figee, who prefers to attack rather than play his Hammond organ. In April 2012, the band was augmented with vocalist Jenny Lane. Today’s recordings were made at a steaming live performance at Utrecht’s Tivoli in 2012.

The international trade fair, exhibition, and festival, jazzahead!, is one of the most important events in the jazz community. Hosted annually in Bremen, Germany, it brings together musicians, bookers, agents, organizers, jazz experts, and music enthusiasts. This year, jazzahead! pays special attention to Poland by selecting 40 jazz acts from all over the world and inviting them to perform over the course of three days. One of them, The Aca Seca Trio, comes from Argentina. Yet, the trio has managed to distance themselves from Argentina’s cultural treasure, tango. Performing different types of music that are not normally associated with South America, the ensemble is part of the 13th edition of the jazzahead! lineup.

The MotorMusic Studios in Mechelen, Belgium, attract many great musicians to the city. A wide variety of visiting international jazz musicians share their art of making jazz music with us in the DJAZZ series ‘Belgium Sessions’. In these sessions, some of Europe’s finest musicians perform their own, original music. The Dutch-Belgian acoustic-electronic piano threesome ‘De Beren Gieren’ (‘The Bears Shriek’, ‘Les Ours Vautours’) are known for their unique energetic sound, sparkling melodies, complex song structures and quirky song titles. ‘De Beren Gieren’ brings a fresh yet familiar blend of polyrhythmic soundscapes, sing-alongs, and elitist twists, building a sonorous bridge between early 20th century classical compositions and more contemporary escapades. ‘De Beren Gieren’ show an ability to change mood quite suddenly in a way that constantly holds the audience’s attention. ‘Jazz a Vienne’ is one of the world's most prestigious jazz festivals. Ever since 1981 it has attracted leading jazz artists, with many of them playing return engagements. Unsurprisingly, the festival's 2013 edition did not fall short of expectations: the lineup was filled with the biggest names in music. Among them was Jose James. He was discovered by the legendary DJ and radio broadcaster Gilles Peterson. Joined on stage by Takuya Kuroda on trumpet, Solomon Dorsey on bass, Kris Bowers on keys, and Richard Spaven on drums, the singer is one of the prime examples of the direction jazz is heading towards.
 
05:35OZMA - InJazz 2019
Jazz festival slash conference inJazz brings together the supply and demand sides of the Dutch jazz scene, helping artists share knowledge and experiences and stimulating the development of international relationships. The conference program includes inspiring panel discussions, workshops, networking sessions and presentations. During the night, promising Dutch jazz acts as well as more seasoned groups hit the stage to show what they’re capable of. One of the artists performing at inJazz is the French collective OZMA. OZMA combines jazz's freedom with chamber music's finesse, rock's raw energy, and electronic soundscapes. Their performances dazzle audiences not only with their masterful technique but also with their daring, thrilling and joyous creativity.

The documentary "Django's Children" follows five Gypsy jazz musicians, who meet near Le Mans to have a jam session into the early hours of the morning. Their journey continues at dawn, new adventures and encounters awaiting them. Their mentality seems to run counter to that of society at large, with its focus on conformity, profitability, property and the current state of the stock markets.
