| 09:26 | | Bach - The Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1 No.1
In 1722, when Johann Sebastian Bach lived in Köthen, Germany, he published a book of preludes and fugues in all 24 major and minor keys. This collection became known as The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book One, BWV 846â869. About two decades later, Bach compiled a second book in Leipzig, which became known as The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book Two, BWV 870-893. Bach intended these pieces for the clavier, which includes the harpsichord, clavichord, and organ. Despite this unclarity, these pieces are regarded as some of the most important works in the history of Western classical music. In this broadcast, Andrei Gavrilov plays Preludes and Fugues Nos. 1 to 12 (BWV 846-857) from Book One of Bachâs Well-Tempered Clavier, recorded at the New Art Gallery in Walsall, England, in 2010.

| 14:00 | | Chopin - Preludes, Op. 28
Alessandra Amara performs Chopin's complete Preludes, Op. 28. Chopin wrote the 24 preludes between 1835 and 1839, partly at Valldemossa, Mallorca, where he spent the winter of 1838â39 and where he had fled with George Sand to escape Paris. Chopin brought a copy of Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier with him to Mallorca and just like Bach's work, Chopin's set of preludes contains a complete cycle of all major and minor keys. Whereas Bach arranged his preludes and fugues according to keys separated by semitones, Chopin choose a circle of fifths, with majors key being followed by its relative minor. The term prelude had been used to describe an introductory piece, however, Chopin's pieces stand as self-contained units.

| 17:16 | | Burgundian Alphabet II - Josquin to Quadris
Enjoy a genuine musical marathon as a prelude to the Utrecht Early Music Festival 2018. During three concerts, the Huelgas Ensemble sing an entire alphabet of Burgundian composers, one for every letter. It concerns composers who were employed by the Burgundian court, with a special exception for Josquin, prince of polyphony. The singers perform arm-in-arm with Paul Van Nevel, visiting mass movements, motets and chansons by known and masters-to-be-discovered like Champion, Divitis, Binchois, de Orto, van Weerbeke, and many others. With âanonymousâ to âincognitoâ they bring a double ode to the many nameless polyphonists who nonetheless made breathtaking contributions to the polyphonic repertoire of the 15th century.

| 00:00 | | Verdi - Luisa Miller
Under the musical direction of Massimo Zanetti, the Orchestre et Choeurs de lâOpĂ©ra Royal de Wallonie present the opera "Luisa Miller". As the result of the collaboration between Verdi and the Neapolitan librettist Salvatore Cammarano, Luisa Miller is based on a play written by Friedrich Schiller titled Intrigue and Love. The work was composed in 1849 for the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. It marks a turning point in Verdiâs production and life, since the composer had moved back to Busseto, his birthplace, while writing it. As a consequence, Verdi distanced himself from patriotic heroism, a typical characteristic found in his early operas. This becomes obvious in his work: the action of Luisa Miller is not part of great historical events, but revolves around love affairs in a simple Tyrolean village. This interpretation was recorded 2014 at the OpĂ©ra Royal de Wallonie, LiĂšge and stars Patrizia Ciofi, Gregory Kunde, Nicola Alaimo, BĂĄlint SzabĂł, Luciano Montanaro, Alexise Yerna, Cristina Melis and Stefano De Rosa.
| 05:31 | | Beethoven - Symphony No. 7, Op. 92 - IV. Allegro
The year 1812 was a busy year for the well-known but deaf composer Ludwig van Beethoven. At last, Beethoven got the chance to meet that other famous German, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, but Goetheâs personality proved a disappointed to Beethoven. The composer was carrying on a hectic love life: in 1812 he wrote his famous letter to an anonymous âUnsterbliche Geliebteâ (âImmortal Belovedâ). Moreover, he was getting involved in the life of his younger brother, who was infatuated with a housekeeper. Yet despite his activities, Beethoven found the time to compose several new works, among which his Seventh Symphony. The piece was first performed in 1813, at a concert for the benefit of wounded soldiers; if ever an orchestra was an all-star ensemble, the orchestra that graced the stage that night certainly deserved that name: Louis Spohr was one of the violinists, and among the other orchestra players were Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Giacomo Meyerbeer and Antonio Salieri. In this broadcast: the fourth movement.
