| 07:00 | | Tony Allen 'Black Voices' in Luxembourg
As part of the 'Printemps Musical' festival, the great Nigerian drummer Tony Allen played at the 'Atelier' in Luxemburg on Friday 1 April 2011
Tony Allen has long been acknowledged as the most original drummer on the planet, and is one of the most influential musicians in Africa, drawing his inspiration from highlife, soul-funk, jazz and traditional Nigerian rhythms. With Fêla Kuti and the Africa 70's ensemble, with whom he played for fifteen years, he invented Afrobeat, a style characterized by its hypnotic rhythms, based on a limited selection of chords repeated in a loop by the guitars and keyboards, with powerful and melodious riffs by the brass section, combined with an awareness of the social, political and urban context of its day. This style has become a major force in Africa and a reference for the rest of the world. | |

The programme is the re-creation of a great Romantic ballet as it would have been staged in its day (the last performance was in 1928): vast painted backdrops, lavish sets, an abundance of costumes, Neptune/The King of the Nile flaunting a great white beard, Egyptians in short zipped skirts, an epic fight against a pride of stuffed lions... Some may find the naïve imagery hard to deal with, including the odd racist cliché, such as the Good Negro with shoe polish on his face, sacrificing his life to save his mistress. But the lack of distance also gives the show some of its strengths, as in its child-like freshness and the obvious enjoyment of the performers. The child left in us can enjoy this colourful and benevolent fantasy world, as predictable as the Adventures of Tintin and as exotic as The Thief of Bagdad. A beautiful performance.
