Depeche Mode formed as the 70s came to an end, in Basildon, Essex. The new decade before them would bring a revolution in electronic music and the band tapped right into it. After signing to Daniel Millerās label, Mute, the group released their first single, Dreaming of Me. Depeche Mode continued to climb the charts and by their third release, Just Canāt Get Enough, they were a UK Top 10 act. Violator became Depeche Modeās biggest selling album. In the US alone it had sold four and a half million copies. The single, Enjoy the Silence, helped push these sales by going gold internationally. Buddy Holly was a central figure of late 1950s, with hits, Thatāll be the Day, Everyday & Peggy Sue. Holly made his second appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in January 1958 and soon after, toured Australia and the UK. In early 1959, he assembled a new band and embarked on a tour of the midwestern U.S. After a show in Clear Lake, Iowa, he chartered an airplane to travel to his next show, in Moorhead, Minnesota. Soon after take-off, the plane crashed, killing him, Ritchie Valens & The Big Bopper, in a tragedy later referred to by Don McLean as The Day the Music Died". | |
