Pulp came together as a band in 1980 Sheffield. Early rehearsals took place in singer Jarvis Cocker’s sitting room. Pulp didn’t really hit public consciousness for a long, long time. The first three albums, It, Freaks and Separations and the single My Legendary Girlfriend was a bit of a music press fave. A lot of people raving about that in the NME. After being frustrated at the distribution and reception of their first three albums, Pulp signed to the independent label, Gift. But they were soon taken on by island Records. The interest from the labels came from the new songs they were performing live, notably one which would become their breakthrough track, Babies. The single, Do You Remember The First Time, funnily enough became their first top 40 hit. Building on its success, the band released the album His ‘n’ Hers which entered the UK top 10. Following on from the critical success of His ‘n’ Hers… Pulp would finally explode on to the mainstream with their huge success of their 1995 single, Common People. The song was the lead single from the album Different Class which topped the UK charts and this time would win Pulp the Mercury Music Prize. | |

Abba are one of Sweden’s biggest exports and the world’s biggest pop act. With sales estimated at 400 million, as a group they are second only the Beatles. However, the pop music that will be remembered for generations to come grew out of a very different sound. Abba entered the Eurovision heats. They succeeded and performed the song Waterloo in the 1974 contest. The band entered superstar status with the 1976 release of their first greatest hits. The token new song on the record was Fernando. It remains Abba’s biggest-selling single to date, with sales of 10 million copies. The late 1970s was a period of unstoppable success for Abba. The 1976 album Arrival, showcased the finely-honed skill of pop song-writing and its lead single, Dancing Queen, was a prime example of that. An artist with intellectual skills is John Legend, who studied English with a major in African American literature at the University of Pennsylvania. In college, he participated in a jazz group called Counterparts and at the time was introduced to singer Lauryn Hill, playing piano on the track 'Everything Is Everything' from the singer's first solo album. He finished college in 1999 and began composing his own songs; Recorded two independent albums that were sold in their performances: 'John Stephens' (2000) and 'Live at Jimmy Uptown' (2001). He has performed on albums of singers like Alicia Key, Jay-Z and also made the album Wake Up! (2010) along with the American rap group, The Roots. His official discography includes Get Lifted (2004), Once Again (2006), Evolver (2008) and Love in the Future (2013). This presentation in London, 2014, at the Itunes Festival, manages to clean the career of this singer who besides being multitalented can be a human rights activist. | |
