| 08:00 | | Les McCann: Live in New Orleans | Stingray Djazz
Self-taught musician Les McCann became the international jazz superstar he is today after the release of his album “Swiss Movement” which he recorded in 1968 with the late Eddie Harris. Yet there is much more to this musician than that one record. McCann moves comfortably from one jazz style to the next, demonstrating impressive chops in all areas, from bop to fusion, and from vocals to the keys of the electric piano, clavinet, or synthesizer. His mix of church and swing music captures the spirit of the time perfectly, even when an illness prevented him from playing with more than one finger at a time in the early 1990s. In today’s broadcast, McCann takes gospel back to New Orleans, where he played this set in 1983. McCann’s vocals shine in the soulful performances of several of his hits, including “Just Like Magic”, backed by his wonderful “Magic Band” of saxophonist Bobby Bryant Jr., bassist Curtis Robertson Jr., and drummer Tony St. James.
| 08:57 | | Shostakovich Symphony No. 5, Op. 47 | Stingray Classica
The Royal Flemish Philharmonic ‘deFilharmonie’ specializes in the historically informed performance of various classical music styles. deFilharmonie’s unique character is shaped by several conductors, such as the Dutch conductor Edo de Waart and the Flemish conductor Philippe Herreweghe. Given his specific background and experience, Herreweghe focuses on the music of the Romantic era and before. The orchestra holds an unusual position in the Flemish music landscape due to its unique nation- and worldwide concert series. Concerts at the Musikverein in Vienna, the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam have drawn crowds. This concert was performed at Antwerp’s Queen Elisabeth Hall under the baton of the Dutch conductor Jaap van Zweden. On the programme is the Symphony No. 5 in D minor by Dmitri Shostakovich.

| 09:01 | | Rhoda Scott & La Velle: Hammond, Soul and Blues | Stingray Djazz
American soul and jazz organist Rhoda Scott spent most of her career in France, where she earned recognition far greater than that accorded to her in the United States. There was never any doubt about what instrument she would play as a child. "It's really the most beautiful instrument in the world,” she once stated in an interview. “The first thing I did was take my shoes off and work the pedals.” This performance at the French Festival Jazz à Vienne is extra special. Not only because of the beautiful location, but also because she shares the stage with American gospel and blues singer La Velle. Together they give an intimate and beautiful show in the antique theatre of Vienne.

| 10:00 | | The Violin's Voice | Stingray Classica
How can we describe the intimate connection between an instrument and its player? World renowned violinist Frank Peter Zimmerman refers to his 1711 Stradivarius "Lady Inchiquin" as the "love of his life," but what does it take for a piece of wood to achieve such reverential status? After having to return his beloved instrument, which was owned by West LB, Zimmerman turned to Martin Schleske, a violin maker considered by many to be a "21st Century Stradivari." This documentary intertwines Zimmerman's tale of separation and reunion with behind the scenes demonstrations of Schleske's work, charting the life of the violin from workshop to concert hall.

The Hammond B3 is an electric organ, which generates sound by creating an electric current from rotating a metal tone wheel near an electromagnetic pickup. Initially, the Hammond B3 was at home in churches, until it entered the jazz scene in the mid-20th century. In this episode, Mostert teams up with the Dallas-born vocalist Dede Priest. She’s renowned for her raw sound. She knows how to sing blues and gospel like no other!

| 11:54 | | Shostakovich - Symphony No. 5, Op. 47 | Stingray Classica
Finnish conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali conducts the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 in D-minor, Op. 47. The Symphony quotes Shostakovich's song Vozrozhdenije (Op. 46, No. 1), which is set to the poem by Pushkin and deals about the subject of rebirth. The mournful Largo movement recalls a genre of Russian symphonic works written in memory of the dead. The harmonic idiom of the work is more tonal than previous symphonies with thematic material being more accessible. The 1937 premiere of the work, which was received remarkably well by critics and the public, was considered a triumph for Shostakovich This performance was recorded at the Gothenburg Concert Hall (Konserthuset) in Sweden, 2020.

This Sonata for Violin and Harpsichord No. 5 BWV 1014 is the fifth out of the set of sonatas Johann Sebastian Bach composed before 1725, probably during his time as chapel master in Köthen. Presumably, he wrote these sonatas for Prince Leopold and later adapted them for further use in Leipzig. Maybe this is why these pieces are well playable for amateurs, while every sonata still has the finesse that can offer a challenge to professional musicians. The different pieces are meant to be a set, just like the Brandenburg concertos. Performers: Frank Peter Zimmermann (violin), Enrico Pace (piano)

| 13:08 | | Stift Festival: Suite del Ángel | Stingray Djazz
Late August is traditionally the time for the annual Stift International Music Festival. Weerselo’s Stift Church and Oldenzaal’s ‘Hofkerk’ serve as venues for wonderful concerts of various young musicians from all over the world. The theme of the 2014 Stift Festival was “Divine and Demonic Passion”. Young musicians performed divine and demonic chamber music by composers such as Astor Piazzolla. Piazolla, who combined classical music and tango, created the ‘Nuevo Tango’ in the 1960s. In this period, he composed a number of tangos inspired on angels. These tangos had a spiritual touch. In the years before his death, Piazzolla used to perform this series of tangos as a single suite, the ‘Suite del Ángel’. This four-tango suite has been performed in several instrumentations. Brava broadcasts the version for bandoneon accompanied by the guitar, violin, double bass, and piano.
| 13:19 | | Beethoven - Piano Sonata No. 5, Op. 10, No. 1 | Stingray Classica
The two sonatas of Op. 14 were completed after Beethoven's No. 8 “Pathétique” and were published together in 1799. The first of these sonatas, No. 9 in E Major, was later arranged by the composer for string quartet. Despite its relative popularity, this became the only such arrangement that Beethoven would write. This performance is taken from Daniel Barenboim's highly esteemed complete rendition of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas, recorded at the Schloss Hetzendorf, Vienna, Austria, in 1983.

| 13:39 | | Salif Keita & Les Ambassadeurs | Stingray Djazz
Salif Keita’s music is a rich combination of traditional Malian music with European and American influences. We can hear this in the instrumentation of Keita’s music, which varies from traditional West-African instruments to Western European ones. The Malian singer was cast out by his family because of his albinism. In 1967 he moved to Bamako, where he started his musical career and joined Les Ambassadeurs (Internationaux). He achieved international acknowledgement with this band in the 1970s. After spending a couple of years in Ivory Coast, Salif has found his home base in Paris since 1984. During this 2010 concert, he proves to be rightfully referred to as “The Golden Voice of Africa”.

| 14:05 | | Homage to Yehudi Menuhin | Stingray Classica
On 22 April 2016, Yehudi Menuhin would have celebrated his 100th birthday. One of his most famous students - and one of his best friends - is violinist Daniel Hope. For him, Yehudi Menuhin was the reason he become a violinist. At first, his mother became the secretary of Menuhin when Daniel Hoe and his parents moved to London. Hope grew up in Menuhin's house and learned not only to love music, but also to make the violin a part of his life. Playing the violin every day is like walking every day, or drinking and eating. He played with Menuhin some of Bartok's Duos which was, according to Hope, an introduction to Bartok’s extraordinary music. A piece of Bartok had to be part of this program as well as Ravel's Kaddish, the encore Daniel Hope choose when Menuhin conducted his last concert in Düsseldorf. But this concert starts with Elgar's Violin Concerto. Hope plays with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin under the baton of Iván Fischer.

| 15:00 | | Ella Fitzgerald - The North Sea Jazz | Stingray Djazz
The North Sea Jazz Festival is the largest indoor music festival in the world, known globally as the event where the past, present and future of jazz are featured within three days. Next to a firm base of jazz as the festival’s staple music genre, many others, such as blues, soul, funk, or hip hop, pass by. In 1979, American singer Ella Fitzgerald gave an unforgettable performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. Fitzgerald, who was noted for her purity of tone, phrasing, "horn-like" improvisational ability and tremendous work ethic, had recorded a live album with the Count Basie Orchestra at the Montreux Jazz Festival the night before. On the program are a number of songs she rarely performed, such as Make Me Rainbows, Some Other Spring, Dindi, and Theme from Love Boat.

| 15:48 | | Sibelius - Wood Nymph, Op. 15 & En Saga, Op. 9 | Stingray Classica
Finnish conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali conducts the Gothenburg Symphony in a performance of two magnificent pieces by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. The concert opens with The Wood Nymph (Finnish: Skogsrået) Op. 15, a musical interpretation of a poem by Swedish writer Viktor Rydberg. Sibelius admired Rydberg's work and often set his poetry to music. The concert closes with a rendition of En Saga, Op. 9. The work is a single-movement tone poem written in 1891. According to the composer, En Saga expresses a mental state which does not allow any literary interpretation; hence it excludes a program or literary source. The adventurous, evocative character of the work encourages many listeners to venture their own interpretations. This concert was recorded at Gothenburg Concert Hall (Konserthuset) in Sweden in 2018.

Quarteto Radamés Gnattali performs Heitor Villa-Lobos's String Quartet No. 11 at the Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janiero, Brasil. The ensemble was founded in 2006 and consists of Carla Rincón and Francisco Roa (violins), Fernando Thebaldi (viola), and Hugo Pilger (cello). The quartet, which specializes in Brazilian music, focuses on educational activities. Their recording of all of Villa-Lobos string quartets is a major achievement and was very well received by international music critics. Except for his Bachianas brasileiras, the performance of many of the Brazilian's compositions is limited to Latin America. Highly regarded as a composer, conductor and educator in his native country, Villa-Lobos has operas, symphonies, concertos, piano repertoire, choral music, and seventeen string quartets to his credit.

| 17:59 | | Europakonzert 2011 - Madrid | Stingray Classica
For twenty years, the Berlin Philharmonic has celebrated its 1882 founding with a concert at a major European venue, and the 2011 event takes place at the magnificent Teatro Real in Madrid. Under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle, the renowned orchestra performs Joaquín Rodrigo’s beloved Concierto de Aranjuez, Emmanuel Chabrier’s exuberant España, and Sergey Rachmaninov’s dramatic Second Symphony. For the first piece, the orchestra is joined by famous flamenco guitarist Cañizares, whose virtuosity and sensitivity are on full display in this multi-faceted and subtle work. The soloist's virtuosity, his technique, harmony, strength and sensitivity have distinguished Cañizares as a unique artist, considered one of the great flamenco musicians of the turn of the century. Above anything else, however, Cañizares praises simplicity and purity of sound, transmitting a message with a high emotional impact, as is proven in this splendid concert.

| 19:09 | | Seine Sessions: Free & Afro Jazz | Stingray Djazz
The phrase ‘jam session’ came about in the 1920s, when white and black musicians would congregate in smoky bars after their regular paying gigs to play the jazz they couldn't in the ‘Paul Whiteman’ style bands. Bing Crosby would often attend these sessions. Musicians would say he was ‘jammin' the beat’, as he clapped on the first and the third beat, rather than the second and the fourth. Now, in the 21th century, DJAZZ takes this ‘jamming’ into a whole new dimension with Seine Sessions. The crème de la crème of the Paris jazz, blues, gypsy and funk scene performs at the legendary club annex restaurant Le Resevoir. And what’s more: these artists never played with each other on stage before! This episode 'Free & Afro Jazz', presented by Eddy King, shows unique blues performances and interviews of among Fantazio, Eddy Lopez and Banoit Savard.

On September 19, 2012, Liège, the economic and cultural centre of Wallonia, reopened its Opera house, anchoring one of Europe's most important Operas in modernity. The season opens with Stradella, the uncompleted work of the youth of the composer César Franck, who was born and raised in Liège, the 1842 manuscript of which was found in the National Library of France in 1984. The world's first production is therefore performed at the Royal Opera House of Wallonia, orchestrated by Luc Van Hove and directed by the film maker Jaco Van Dormael. The opera tells the story of the Duke of Pesaro. He has ordered his lieutenant Spadoni to abduct the beautiful maiden Leonor in the middle of the Carnival in Venice. Having locked her away in his mansion, the Duke tries to win her love by employing the famous singer Stradella to woo her, unaware that Stradella and Leonor are actually an item. Music by César Franck, Libretto by Emile Deschamps and Emilien Pacini.

Claude Debussy’s symphonic sketches for orchestra known collectively as ‘La Mer’ evoke a richly varied vision of the sea. The first part (‘De l’aube á midi sur la mer’) calls up a morning and afternoon at sea, the second (‘Jeux de vagues’) echoes the play of the waves, and the third and final part (‘Dialogue du vent et de la mer’) conjures the communing voices of wind and waves. Debussy knew his sea, the Mediterranean, intimately both from childhood visits to Cannes and from his Italian travels later in life.

Hervé Niquet conducts the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir in a stage production of Jean Baptiste Lully's opera Persée (1632-1687) by Opera Atelier in Toronto, Canada’s Baroque Theatre Company recorded at the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre in 2004. Among the soloists are Olivier Laquerre, Stephanie Novacek, Monica Whicher, Marie Lenormand, Alain Coulombe, and Curtis Sullivan. Composed by Jean Baptiste Lully for Louis XIV, Persée is widely recognized as Lully’s greatest creation and was considered the crowning achievement of 17th century French music theatre. Filled with dancing, fight scenes, monsters and special effects, this truly spectacular opera recounts the thrilling story of Perseus, son of Zeus and heroic vanquisher of the snake-haired Gorgon Medusa.

| 01:00 | | Winston McAnuff - Electric Dread | Stingray Djazz
Vocalist and composer Winston McAnuff was born in the hills of Jamaica in 1957. Reggae was ingrained in his life from an early age. On stage at the French world music festival Les Escales Saint-Nazaire, Winston “Electric Dread” McAnuff steps beyond his role as Rastafarian preacher, performing with a fiery spirit that is as distinctive as it is jovial. He runs across the stage, lectures the crowd, and rolls around joyfully on the floor. But where does his boundless energy come from after so many years of silence? How does McAnuff share his memories and beliefs with the “old white Europe”, where he makes his comeback thanks to the Makasound label? In contrast to his stage charisma, we share moments with him in an intimate setting, seated and relaxed. Against a neutral backdrop of a stage under construction, guitar in hand, he recounts stories about Rasta culture. His words and prayers evoke poetry from far-off Jamaica, the land of his first musical inspiration and his first life-changing encounters. Even though this great island is far away, the ghosts of elders are ever-present.

Considered as being part of the most brilliant and renowned Cuban musicians of their generation, this band of 7 had the excellent idea of composing an album entitled " Y que !? (So What) ", nine pieces which reflect the diversity of influences and rhythms of El Comité. Afrobeat, funk, Latin jazz, ballades a " Cuban groove Siglo 21 " to put between all ears, impressive compositions, revivals marked El Comité, always stamped with the fluidity and energy which characterises this group. Despite their youth, their 15 or 20 years on the international stage for most of them, gives a veritable maturity to this album. The harmonies and thematic structures are an ample illustration. And finally, on stage, it is always a real pleasure to see El Comité developing where their overflowing energy and musical generosity rapidly becomes contagious.

Here are at least are 7 good reasons to listen to El Comité : Harold Lopez-Nussa, Rolando Luna, Rodney Barreto, Yaroldy Abreu, Gaston Joya, Carlos Sarduy and Irving Acao !

Twelve years after the death of Jimmy Smith, Lucky Peterson, pays a tribute to the master of the Hammond organ." There is no doubt that it was a suitable way to honour Jimmy Smith, who was a reference in the realm of jazz soul and with whom he had exchanged in his youth. | 03:58 | | Anita Oday Live in Sweden 1963 | Stingray Djazz
Anita O’Day boasts two wonderful concerts from 1963 and 1970 that present the “jazz singer supreme” in impeccable form. O’Day’s horn-based approach to singing is in full effect throughout both shows including stand-out renditions in each show of audience favorites “Tea For Two” and “Sweet Georgia Brown” (both reprised from her triumphant appearance at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival.) This show is a fitting testimony to one of jazz music’s true originals and shows unequivocally why she is ranked in the top tier of vocalists along with Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Billie Holiday.

| 04:53 | | Jacques Loussier in Lepzig: Play Bach and More | Stingray Djazz
In 1959, Jacques Loussier hit upon the idea that was to make his international reputation, by combining his interest in jazz with his love of J.S. Bach. Only a pianist with such an exceptional classical technique and deft improvisatory skill could have nurtured such a vision. He founded the Play Bach Trio, which used Bach's compositions as the basis for jazz improvisation. The trio immediately caught the public imagination. In their live appearances, tours and concerts, plus a succession of recordings built on the cornerstone of four albums made between 1960 and 1963, Loussier's group achieved the breakthrough to popular commercial success enjoyed by only a select few jazz musicians. In fifteen years, the trio sold over six million albums! On July 28th 2004, the day of Bach's 254th anniversary of death, the Jacques Loussier Trio perform a special concert at the famous St. Thomas Church of Leipzig - the city where Bach composed many of his most famous works.

| 06:00 | | Buxtehude - Abendmusik | Stingray Classica
Dietrich Buxtehude is one of the founding fathers of the 17th century German school, whose influence on composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, his spiritual son, cannot be overestimated. Not only was he an indisputable master of organ music, but also a prolific composer whose oeuvre consists of more than 200 works. Buxtehude spent his life traveling between Lübeck and Helsingborg, Hamburg and Copenhagen. Very innovative, at a pivotal time in the history of music, Buxtehude established the ‘Abendmusiken’ (Evening Concerts) that were introduced by his predecessor Franz Tunder on the five Sundays preceding Christmas. Let’s us join the Masques ensemble and the Vox Luminis choir and discover 17th century baroque music and the composer Buxtehude through his vocal compositions, ranging from spiritual concert, choral, aria to cantata parties. The ensembles are led by Olivier Fortin and Lionel Meunier. This concert was recorded in 2017 at Centre Amuz in Antwerp, Belgium.
